Am I the only person who’s constantly cracking their 19” AMG OEM rims??

Is that one of the forged ones?

Forging is a metal strengthening process using heat and pressure. A forged component (piston, piston rod, wheel, etc) will always have a higher yield strength than a simply machined part will have. Yield is the point at which the material begins to fail. Looking at the pics, I believe this is a forged wheel by the markings although not positive.Originally Posted by Mcgregor1978
No idea what that means?
Probably an easier question would have been:
Are the wheels stock or aftermarket? If stock, they are forged.

Now I know, thanks. I still couldn’t tell you. I bought the car second hand and the rims are OEM. I’ve cracked them 5 times and counting. At this point there are so many welds on 2 of the rims that I’ve decided they’re to be recycled. I’m just trying to see if I love just had some bad luck or if the are known for this. The after market replicas I bought for summer were gear for 6 months. I put the OEMs on with the winter tires, within 2 weeks cracked a rim in two places.

I am not aware of this being any common issue at all. Are the wheels cracking in new places each time, or are the new welds re-cracking? Something certainly seems off here. I assume you are not hitting curbs or anything. We have guys on this forum that track their cars a fair amount and I haven't heard of them even cracking OEM wheels.Originally Posted by Mcgregor1978

ExploreJust typical potholes, always new cracks. I’ve learned that the weld will not crack but makes the rest of the wheel weaker. The rim should have been trashed after the first crack I think

Correct. I was going easy on you. Lol. But that was my thinking too! Looks like you need a new set. Good news (not) a set of OEM wheels is only about $9500 new. Ugh but there are guys on this site parting with good used sets for much less.Originally Posted by Mcgregor1978

Good luck.

The irony being that forged wheels are supposed to provide greater strength and are therefore more resistant to shocks. Obviously, not the case with your wheels. I would definitely trying using a different set.
For sure guys thanks, the replicas I bought for my summers are great. $1000 cdn taxes included and shipped to my house. I’ll just buy another set for my winters. Cheers

Not correct. The 5 spoke wheels are forged, the ten spoke ones are cast. From the pic his do look like the 5 spokers, so forged.Originally Posted by Vrodman

I guess I stand corrected. My mistake. I was under the impression that the justification in the OEM wheel's price was in large part due to them all being forged. The wheels shown have markings that I believe are associated with forging. None of this matters anyway, since it sounds like the OP is scrapping this set of wheels.Originally Posted by signes
