I understand that flaking of the clear coat on our cars calipers is not too rare. It seems I have a mild case on a couple of wheels.

Just curious if anyone else that had this did anything to rectify it. And if so, what was your remedy?

Car is just out of factory warranty, but not not out of MB ELW. Kinda doubting that it's a warranty item anyway though.

Thanks in Advance

This happened to both my front calipers. MB Canada denied a warranty claim, but after some negotiation, they replaced both calipers with brand new ones as a goodwill fix. My car was within the factory warranty when this happened. If they were unwilling to replace them, i would have got them re-cleared by a local paint shop.

i think the problem is damn near pandemic. all of the performance pack AMG's that I looked at suffered from it, to one extent or another. i re-cleared mine a couple weeks ago. ordered some DuPont clear engine enamel and model paint (1103T) to touch up the nicks. came out pretty well...

Were you able to do the work without removing the calipers? Like removal of wheels only?

This was after I cleaned the brake dust off...

yup. Just removed the wheels and taped everything up. Went with 4 coats of clear.

You will probably have to peel some of the old clear off, as well, as brake dust has gotten underneath the edges...

Worth seeing if ELW will cover this ... the b2b absolutely has been covering it

To whomever owns this car:
I would remove those stickers that are sitting on the mounting surface of your wheel.
You see where the made in ITALY one has been smashed by wheel.

What this does it prevent the wheelfrom properly seating unto hub and being flat so tire can get very small wobble.

This surface should always be cleaned when you remove a wheel - in fact I sand mine with 500 to 1000 grit paper to remove any rust or corrosion build up.
Also I will apply high heat never seize very sparingly to these surfaces to prevent corrosion and wheel sticking to hub centric ring.

just found the same thing on one of my front calipers, although to a much less extent than 1maverick.
mine's going in to get the rear hatch motor and parking brake replaced in a couple weeks. will have to ask about the peeling brake caliper as well. stay tuned.

Small world!

Who is your advisor there? Mine is Charlie. I will call him and see what they can do. My factory warranty just ended about 3 weeks ago, but I am still under ELW.

I may have seen you around on the streets. lol.

One of my front caliper is also peeling in several areas and the vehicle is still under the original warranty. I'll have to call the dealer to see if they'll cover it.

are the calipers painted or powder coated?

I believe they are powder coated for the base red and then clear coated over the top with high temp clear paint. Not 100% positive though. This is an educated guess based on my experience in the auto industry engineering end of things.

i would say that youre right as the color bleeds on to your rags when youre washing the part where the clearcoat has peeled...

Talked to my SA last night and he said the calipers are covered the same under the factory warranty as the ELW. But, he also said the he wasn't sure for paint issues only though. He did say that if they covered someone at their dealership for this as BaldMike said he was, then they can likely get a forman approval to replace them for the paint. In my case that means at least 3 out of 4 !!!

UPDATE:
So my clear coat on the calipers has progressively gotten worse. Now all 4 wheels have a moderate case of it. Also, the exposed areas of the underneath red powder coat have turned orange-ish.

So I dropped off the car yesterday at the dealer for a coolant reservoir leak and service and stated my case regarding the calipers. It's not final yet, but my SA left me a vmail that he thinks he can get them replaced at no cost to me! REALLY crossing my fingers. These guys continue to take great care of me. (remember the new engine 9 months ago?)

So even with all the stuff they are going to do at this visit, he said in his vmail that he noticed my driver's side visor doesn't sit completely flat against the headliner. Says it hangs about a 1/4 inch away. OMG! Can't have that. LOL. SO he is replacing it at no cost. My daughter damaged my cargo tray in the trunk putting her suitcase back there. It's hard to open now. They are replacing that too!

He will be getting a very nice bottle of his favorite spirit no matter the cost if these calipers get replaced!

I will update you when I know for sure the outcome. I think it's just up to the factory rep at this point who is the same guy that approved the new motor.

Damn! This car is like the Phoenix coming out of the fire in rebirth!!! Seems like it's hit or miss across the country if dealers warranty the calipers

Yeah,

I'm guessing it's the newest overall 2015 in the country! lol The list is long on the warranty replacements. They even put in a new steering column right before I bought it.

IT’S OFFICIAL
Just heard from my SA. All 4 calipers getting replaced under warranty!!

Only small hitch is 1 of them won’t be available until December. Not a big deal. I’ll just bring it back for that one when it arrives.

I see in my crystal ball a bottle of Don Julio 1942 in my SA’s near future. 😎

So it looks like I may as well roll on the new wheels too.
