14 E63 S Startup rattle....help?

Hello,

I just bought this 14 E63 AMG S. M157 Engine. It is making a rattle on startup. I can only reproduce the noise when it has been run...sits for approximately 30 mins and then start again, it does it. I finally caught it on video. In the video it makes the noise for about 2 seconds. The longest I've heard it is maybe 4 seconds and it goes away.

I've looked around quite a bit and found some forums on it, but nothing specific besides cam chain tensioner or adjuster. Some forums say most of them do it and it is normal. Others say there's a remedy for it? Ideas? Cost?

CommonTensioners. Being a 14, you most likely have check valves, but the tensions are an issue with 12 to even as late as 15.

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to take it in to have it looked at. I have a 3rd party warranty and I'm going to give it a shot...if they play games I'm still well within the 45 days to get a full refund. Any guesses on if this would be covered? Last question would be what is the time frame I have to fix this? Are cam tensioners a NOW issue or can this wait a week or two?

According to the TSB, it's purely an annoyance, not harmful

Any link to this service bulletin? I guess it's my paranoia talking now . Annoyances I can live with, stupid repairs for lack of preventative maintenance I will kick myself forever. Thanks again Kenny.

Yes, get it fixed and if you are diy, it’s not a terrible job. My thoughts are that it’s worth it regardless of the level of annoyance because noise is due to lack of lubrication, creating wear, and wear means we think about all the other “ifs”. It’s my personal feeling that this issue is related to other issues such as cylinder scoring. Lack of immediate lubrication or slack in the chain when starting up have to play some part. Fwiw I have never had the sound come back after the updates to my 13 that did not have check valves or updated tensioners upon purchase. I waited a year, tried oils, additives, but noting helped for more than a few days. This procedure is an immediate fix. Fcp euro for the parts, and an Indy or dealer, and warranty. Diy I was about 600 all in. But once in there you’ll want to do turbo and coolant lines, imo. They are another five bills. Then cam magnets…. It’s all a matter of what you want to preventively fix, or wait and have warranty fix. I like to minimize my downtime and hate leaving my car at shops too long. For 1500 you can get a ton of diy done.

good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I dropped it off today at the MB dealer. I have a 3rd party warranty so hopefully some or all of this repair will be covered. I will probably take your advice and do those lines as well while they have it on the operating table. Will report back what they find. The service specialist I was assigned to said they are familiar with the issue and that I wasn't the first one to come in with it rattling. I'll feel better when this is all over. Fingers crossed.

It is assumed that by 2016 all of the engines had check valves installed in both sides of the engine. The timing chain was updated in 2013 (and in my 2013 produced in ‘12) The tensioners have likely been upgraded by mb since 16. If your m157 engine has this startup noise, documented elsewhere on the site as well, this is the suspected culprit. From 12-16, timing chain check valves and tensioners were all addressed in some way. You can check the part number and see when the last revision was and if after 16, you car will need them at some point.

Car is fixed

This is my reply to the original post I made. I got the car back from my local MB dealer. The updated cam chain tensioners have been installed. Noise is GONE! I'm also glad I got it in because someone previously had replaced the turbo coolant lines and did a sloppy job. They found loose clamps and a few other missing brackets that were corrected as well. Overall they said the car is in great shape. My next project is brakes and paint correction. Thanks again for the help. All said and done I was out the door for $1966.00 of which I'm still waiting to hear if the warranty company will pick up some of the tab. I can now sleep at night.

Which warranty company do you have?

it's called Performance First through a company named Renascent Protection Services. They arent really impressing me with their lethargic response time and run around. I'm still within the 45 days of the vehicle purchase to get a full refund. My MB rep is still working on it so the jury is out. We'll see.

I heard both sides of the argument. Some said annoyance some said fix it. I erred on the side of caution and did the repair at my local MB dealer. They did find some other things that were not right as far as brackets being put back correctly when the turbo coolant lines had been replaced at some point. Bout $2100 bucks for the updated cam chain tensioner. Haven't heard the noise since.

the video clip noise def sounds something is wrong/off. However, I’ve noticed many of m157 engines on start up it has a ticking noise for the first 1-2seconds. Hot or cold.
