Purflux is the OE. The bottom picture is the Mercedes Genuine filter. They are the same.

The Purflux filter is $11.39 and the Mercedes is $29.59. Purflux is less than half the price.

Correct. The point was to use Genuine (and pay for the Mercedes logo) or the exact same OE part. I would not use Fram or even Purolator for my Mercedes.

For folks unfamiliar with the terms Genuine, OE, OEM, and Aftermarket, here's a good tutorial:

thanks for the link i wasn't aware of those terms.. so to rephrase myself i use Genuine parts

in the meantime i thought that genuine parts might be with better quality than the producer (OE ones)

Isn't x-clean a diesel oil though? Plus x-clean sounds like an oil designed for emissions and fuel economy.

Years ago, a mechanic told me that adding a quart of transmission fluid before a change was just as good as a flush. Regardless, I still would not do it. When changing every 3000 to 5000 miles, there should not be a problem with sludge. Use a good filter (no, I do not agree with the cheapest filter you can find at Walmart) and change the fluid often and you should have no problems.
I don't hear about flushes for a while as well.

There are those that use OE, OEM, and Genuine interchageably. South Main Auto on YouTube will say Genuine parts and OE manufactured parts are not the same when it comes to parts like O2 sensors. From the FCP tutorial, however, OE parts are the EXACT same as Genuine with the logo removed, where OEM is a part made by an OE manufacturer, but not the part used by the car company. It's a bit confusing because, for example, Lemforder will appear as OE for some parts and OEM for others. The hope is the quality is not different between the manufacturing process used for both. Aftermarket is like the step-child to the family of other classifications -- not necessarily inferior, but no shared DNA.

When looking to replace a part, I consider the price and criticality of the component. For things that are difficult to replace, such as engine mounts, the extra dollars are worth the expense of replacing a prematurely failed part. For others things, like the oil filter, the price difference does not justify the risk of using a non-Genuine part, since they are the same. Then, there is always the decision to pay 2 to 3 times the price for an expensive part just to use Genuine. For example, the HPFP for my SL400 is pretty easy to get to because of all the space in the engine bay. So, I will go with the Bosch OE pump for the price of the Mercedes Genuine pump.

The other thing I consider is who I am buying from. FCP with its forever warranty guarantee assures me that they are not going to sell crap because they are on the hook to replace it if it fails. Other retailers offer similar assurances, so it is always good to compare. If there is consensous amoung the more popular retailers (FCP, Pelican Parts, AutohausAZ, ECS Tuning, UroTuning, EEuroparts, etc.) on a single brand, that is also an indication that the part is good.

I mean, I appreciate the recommendation from him although I would probably stick with motul xcess gen 2 since it works for me, I thought of going to 5W-50 before but he also cautioned me against it especially if I drive high RPMs often.

since you're using SN i don't think is bad idea if you find x clean SP to make one/two cycles and then move to 5 40 power SP instead using xcess gen 2 SN

Oops I meant M156 sorry for the typo, already corrected in original post quoted. Thank goodness the edit function seems to be working this AM.
