lots...

I know people with stock cars are also having problems. The issue I believe is the pin which opens/closes the valve fails.

Had a bad valve, which caused an actuator failure too. Pin issue, as you mentioned.

Not quite sure what you mean.

There is only one company in Germany that produces (and they do so for Merc/Audi/Mclaren (don't know about bmw) so I don't know what would be available aftermarket. You can get sensors that 'trick' the computer to thinking the exhaust is open but then you have to weld the valve open....given the cars are under warranty there is no reason to screw around with it.

The 1st set failed after 3,000 miles....the 2nd set failed before it left the dealers. Hopefully 3x is the charm for me. Did the recall on the rad intake and changed diff oil so all good now.

What are the symptoms to look out for if the valves fail?

I meant going towards aftermarket exhaust systems, AWE, Akrapovic, Meisterschaft

...either the exhaust stays quiet when you push the button (stuck closed) or it stays loud even when off (stuck open).

that’s what i thought, but somebody said when you open your exhaust valves. they don’t all stay open 100% of the time

and if one gets stuck closed during wide open throttle, ecu will cut power

again, all speculation/“forum” guessing but, may be true
