AMG Drive Unit steering wheel retrofit

What are the chances a 2020 steering wheel, with AMG Drive Unit and associated functionality, can be retrofitted to a 2019 car?

Asked my dealer a few months ago about this for my S63 (MY19), they did some research, but is not an easy task. Not just putting the left and right buttons to the steering wheel. Since my car has a heated steering wheel, that can not be combined, the whole steering wheel had to be replaced too!

I knew the whole wheel would need to be replaced and that the heating fucntion wasn't compatible but didn't know what else was necessary to integrate the Drive Unit fucntionality. I forgot to post this but I asked two different dealerships, one of which has a 19 E63s if this could be done and that it's a requirement for any AMG I consider, and the dealership with the car didn't even answer the question. However the other salesman checked with their service technicians and said that it couldn't be done.

Hard pill to swallow seeing a 2020 E63s spec'd for me slip away and there are maybe two, that I've been able to find, in the country that lack one of my desired options, CCB.

Check out these guys in the link below. I don’t have any affiliation or experience with steering wheel swaps. I just heard that they specialize in the very thing you’re interested in:

edit: link might not be allowed so look up CKM car designs

Thanks BC-2, I have already contacted them and got the same answer; just doesn't make sense why the integration would be so difficult. The heating I understand.

Strangely enough, I learned about the AMG Drive Unit watching YouTube clip about a 2020 C63s and at that point I realized I'd have to special order an E63 in order to get everything I wanted. It's always struck me as strange how auto manufacturers make these mid year changes and unless you're dialed into a forum or other similar network for specific info, you'd never know what was out there.

Okay, I didn’t see steering wheels on their site with the drive select on them but hoped they may be working on something. It does seem to be difficult though because the model years without the AMG drive units in the steering wheel would also not have any of the wiring in the steering column area to retro fit it. Much like the heated option.

Good luck on the mission.

I have the buttons on my 2020 and use them both within 10 seconds of starting the car. I disable auto start stop and open up the exhaust in comfort every time I turn on the wagon. Love the buttons. Don’t give up on it!

I knew the minute I saw them it was a must have, even better than the one on the Porsche 911 Carreras GTS I test drove.

Yes it can be done and it's quite a common conversion here in the UK.

Would like to get this done on my UK 2018 E63 S so that's good news!

Do you have a contact for a dealer that's completed this? I heard its a bit complicated in terms of Germany needing to recode the car etc?

Email this chap, I spoke to him last night. I'll be calling him to get my GLB done when I pick it up. He also fits distronic amongst other things.

Sure would like to know as soon as you get your AMG Drive Unit retrofit on you 2018 E63s. Needless to say that it'll require the 2019 MY steering wheel; good luck.

For those who haven't seen it, a guy on the G63 forum added the AMG Drive selectors to his wagon without swapping out the whole steering wheel.

MY18 W213 E63's don't have the same steering wheel as the member you reference.

Yes, mine was delivered late 2018 as a MY2019 so can aim to do the same conversion.

Anyone have links to the part numbers required or a vendor?

We offer it as a retrofit, and we can send the parts and code this to your vehicle no matter where you are in the world. We also have a solution to make it work with vehicles that have heated steering with a custom wiring harness.

Is it possible in your view to replace the entire steering wheel from the MY21s to an earlier model wheel like the MY20s and have it fully operational/functional?
