Theft

I want to get custom wheels for my C320, but the thing is, I'm afraid of those damn thieves. I know about putting on custom nuts on the wheels, but do they really help that much? I also have Teleaid, but are thieves able to get around that?

I'd like to hear your stories if you've ever had run-ins with thieves.

We were at ouside a club in Santa Monica and forgot the code we used for the alarm. We kept punching in different numbers and kept setting off the allam. The police came within 8 minutes after getting several phone calls from passerbys about a bunch of young thieves.

Well, not really the story you're looking for.

On my cars with cutom (aftermarket) rims, I always put on lugs that need keys. Most people buy 1 set (4 lugs) and put one lug on each rim that needs a key. I buy 5 sets...so that all 20 lugs need a key. When a theif sees that I think they look the other way, they are a pain to take off without the key (but it can be done). The lugs that need the special keys aren't cheap, but then again so are the rims.

Can you point me to a website that sells that type of nuts?

Also, I've heard security nuts are weaker than the standard ones, meaning they might come lose easier. Is that true?

According to a poster on another site (in the car business), if a thief is intent on getting your wheels, they will jack the car up and 'drop' it repeatedly until the lugs snap off. Then they walk away with the wheels and tires.
As you would imagine, this is not good for the rest of the car.

I'd imagine a locking nut would discourage the casual thief though.

What do you mean by dropping it repeatedly? How will that make the lugs fall off?

Apparently, they raise one end as high as they can and let it fall to the ground over and over. This eventually causes the lug bolts to shear right off the wheel.

But if they tried that my Teleaid would be set off!

Will thieves be able to steal my wheels (with lock nuts) without setting off the Teleaid?

Good question! Every now and again I jack up my SLK to remove the wheels for cleaning. This immediately sets off the anti-towing alarm. I just wish was that there was some alarm that I could carry that would go off when the car alarm went off because nobody else cares!
