‘MBWorld’ Member’s Leaky C36 AMG Gets Plugged Up
Current owner of C36 AMG fixed previous owner’s lack of cooling maintenance, including radiator with 24-year-old stop-leak!
You never know what you’ll find in our MB World Forums! We have sub-forums for practically every Mercedes ever built. You’ll also find more than a few of them for sale in our classifieds. From there, you can seek advice on maintaining and upgrading your ride, shop for parts from our vendors, even learn where you can meet with other forum members. You’ll also find some amazing stories from the forums. Like this one of a C36 AMG whose current owner discovered lacked proper cooling maintenance from the previous owner.
Here’s how he fixed 24 years of trash.
“Previous owner was religious on the oil changes but not the anti-freeze I guess,” writes Low C320. “The tank was pure green until driving the car around for a few days. I opened it up and discovered a brown hint to it! At first, I thought it was head gasket time, but really it was really old antifreeze.”
Following a proper flush and new coolant, the poster found the C36 AMG’s radiator sprung some leaks. Turned out the previous owner poured some stop-leak in it some 24 years ago, and called it a day. Thus, the old and busted radiator went to the scrapyard, replaced with a new and happening unit.
While working on the cooling system, the poster also took care of the timing chain, plus gaskets for it and the valve covers. Those gaskets were originally replaced by lots of RTV, enough to make the current owner want to strangle the mechanic’s shoddy work on the C36 AMG.
Once all the cooling was sorted and the OEM blue antifreeze was mixed 50/50 with distilled water into the radiator, the poster cleaned up the C36 AMG to better than new. As it is now, his ride “has been awesome” on the street.
In the future, the poster plans to add air suspension for maximum comfort and coolness. His friend is selling him an air-ride kit from a C43, customizing it to work with the W202 chassis. We can’t wait to see his C36 AMG get low.
