EV reveal

Mercedes-Benz CEO confirms that all-electric AMG models are coming and will be officially revealed on May 19.

Everyone knows by now that the entire auto industry is going electric. This of course includes Mercedes-Benz. Leading Mercedes into this all-electric future is the brands popular Mercedes-EQ series. These are the typical bread and butter Mercedes vehicles. A mid-size sedan and SUV and the flagship EQS model that is essentially the all-electric S-Class. Developing vehicles such as these makes sense. But the letters AMG stand for something different. An AMG model is on that lunatic fringe with huge power and often a booming V8 engine to announce its presence. Well, all-electric AMG models are also coming and will round out the Mercedes-Benz EV lineup. If you think the switch to electricity will reduce demand of these performance vehicles, don’t be so sure.

Recently Reuters has reported that demand has been rising for the Mercedes-EQ series vehicles to the point that they are virtually sold out at this point. Certainly, the global supply chain issues are contributing to the sold-out status, but there is no question that consumers are excited about these all-electric vehicles. There is no reason to think that demand will not be the same for the AMG brand.

FT Future of the Car 2022 Conference

Charging

You can probably guess by the name, but the Future of the Car conference held in London is all about where the car industry is headed. Naturally in the year 2022 electricity is the dominant topic. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius spoke at the event regarding the demand for electric vehicles outstripping supply. When asked about the demand for the EQ family of electrified luxury vehicles he said it has been “so tremendous that we’re doing everything we can to get the cars to the customers as fast as we can”.

All-Electric AMG

No matter how you feel about the AMG brand going electric it is happening and happening soon. Kaellenius also spoke to that at the conference. “We’re now in full development of a fully-dedicated electric architecture for AMG, from the ground up,” he said, adding that the platform would hit the market “sometime towards end of 2025”. He went on to say that the fully electrified platform for its high-performance AMG brand would be unveiled at a strategy update the company has scheduled for May 19.

Electric Performance

EQS

The Mercedes-Benz EQS580 4Matic is already a quick car. It can hit 60 mph in the mid 3-second range. Not the quickest EV on the planet but certainly not slow.  And that is not an AMG model. That car produces 516 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, we can expect the AMG version of the car to pack even more punch. The same will be true across all models when comparing the EQ series to the AMG series. Knowing the history of AMG performance and the ability of electric vehicles to accelerate with instant torque delivery we expect the new all-electric AMG models to be seriously quick machines. We also have faith that Mercedes-Benz will tune them to be competent all-around performance cars and not just one trick electric ponies. We can’t wait until the official reveal on May 19.
