Mr. Regular Drives the 2000 Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor

Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 Kompressor

We can point out the obvious here: the SLK230 will almost always be compared to the Mazda MX5. In my opinion though, they were built for very different purposes. The SLK wasn’t really going to smear your face off while approaching an apex, and you know what? It never promised that it would. It was much more so a luxury compact convertible that could have fun if your arthritis wasn’t acting up.

Debuting in 1996, the SLK (designed by Michael Mauer who later went on to Porsche and dew up the Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera) combined styling cues previously found in SL lineage with a departure from the boxy styling of the early ’90s. It carried over a lot of things familiar to the Mercedes lineup of that era, but it was indeed dated by the time 2000 came around. And if you wanted a unicorn, a few equipped with a manual gearbox have managed to pop up every now and then.

Yet in the video below, Mr. Regular seems focused primarily on how it compares to the MX5, which is smaller, less comfortable, and noisier. Yes, a Mercedes would be a bit more of a menace to your wallet, and it doesn’t exactly scream youthful vigor, but that’s not the reason we like Mercedes.
