Visual Impairment: Fake AMG Exhaust Tips

Putting fake AMG badges on a car is one thing, but another thing that may irk you (warning: you can’t un-see!) is AMG’s new direction with exhaust ports. I think “ports” sounds more appropriate than “tips” because those are basically obscured by the bumper cover now. What used to protrude proudly and rumble with AMG stamped pride is now hidden away from view behind some chrome rings that fool us into believing they are part of the exhaust.

Sadly this is the state of affairs, as brought up in a recent MBWorld forum thread, where a GLE 63 coupe was spotted with the quadruple-ported offenders.

Now it’s fair to point out one good opinion in the thread: perhaps it’s designed that way to keep you from doing some severe exhaust system damage simply because you lightly back into something. That could very well have a lot to do with it, as exhaust systems aren’t exactly cheap, and small fender taps do happen (though we wish they wouldn’t).

But when Lexus introduced the IS F in 2008, they were chided for using fake exhaust tips. Is this really somewhere Mercedes-AMG wants to follow Lexus’ lead?

So what are your thoughts? Is this a story of AMG beginning to lose touch, or are we just looking into this a little too much?
