Do Winter Tires Grip Better in Warm Months?

By -

Video compares the grip of winter tires and all-season tires in warm weather.

Common sense would tell you that a tire that’s good on super icy, snowy conditions would be even better on normal, sunny days, right? If it can grip the ice and snow, then it should be way better in perfect conditions. Well, not so fast! In this new video by Engineering Explained, they hope to put an end to that misconception.

In the video, the driver tests two types of tires, an all-season Yokohama Geolandar G95 and a Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 winter tire. The test is just a simple stop from 60 mph. Surprisingly, the Yokohamas perform much better in stopping time and distance to stop. It’s not even close.

So, don’t waste those expensive winter tires during the warmer months. For best performance, definitely switch to an all-season tire when the temperatures begin to rise!
