Switches in 2003 SLK32 AMG Console Compartment

There are two small switches located in the console compartment. Are they tied into the FSS System? Have not been able to find a reference in the shop manual.

If they don't look like the rest of switches installed by Mercedes, they weren't. Mercedes didn't install anything in console related to FSS--that's the "reset" button on instru cluster.

Reset

I understand the instrument cluster switch functions, but one of these switches has a little wrench on it and the other has a little "i" on it. I pushed the wrench switch and rechecked the oil change miles remaining, the value dropped from 7400 to 6500. I think the "i" switch may reset the service interval. Could this be a RENNTECH modification? I purchased the car from an older couple in Texarkana, Texas. They purchased it on vacation in Palm Beach. The car may have been purchased in Germany and brought over here by a Palm Beach resident. I have not had time for further research.

Are you talking about these "i" and "wrench" buttons?

Do you have the manual for the car (I think you have, this is what I interpret from your first post)?

Diesel Benz is gently suggesting that you read the Owner's Manual. The switches are for the Tele-Aid system. If you don't have an owner's manual, you can register on the MBUSA website at http://www.mbusa.com and then download an owner's manual as a pdf file. Go to the "Owners Online" section - then click on the"about my MB" tab then on "owner's manual." You may have to register on the site (it's free) to get to the page. You can also get your warranty info and maintenance booklet. On a different tab, you can check your car's service history.

If your manual is not available electronically, there is an address on the site where you can purchase a printed version.

Your current Tele-Aid is analog. All Analog cellular service will be discontinued in the U.S. in just a few weeks. There is a digital upgrade to Tele-Aid available for many cars; it is discussed on the MBUSA website. See post #3 at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/audi...displayed.html and follow the link for updates.

Owners Manual/Shop Manual

Thank you very much for the information. I have ordered the official SLK Series CD which includes the owners manual along with the shop manual. I have no immediate plans to use the Tele Aide System, but I will look into this further and will study this resource carefully. I have been relying on information from a friend of mine who owns a 1999 SLK 230 which has a phone installed in the console, but no buttons.

Sorry I misunderstood earlier.

Tele Aid is Mercedes' equivalent to GM's OnStar.

The "i" button just connects you to an operator for information. Location of nearest Mercedes dealer, restaurant recommendation, etc.

The wrench button gets you directly to technical help, perhaps even to having a dealer service vehicle come meet you.

As, noted, however, you have to subscribe (for a fee) and if you want to your equipment will have to be upgraded.

This system simply wasn't offered in '99.

Regarding the "dealer service vehicle," there's probably an 800 number decal in your glove box--it's 800.for.merc--and you can call this with any phone, not just the Tele Aid system.

Lots of folks report it's the best way to get a new battery installed, for example.

Back when we had a W124 and experienced the typical ignition switch failure, the advice given got us home.
