I paid $200 in ATL for 30% tint & warranty. It had it done at the dealer before I even bought the car. My tip was to not go swimming after a heavy meal

Do you tip your mechanic? How about the guy who comes out to unclog your toilet? My guess is that the shop is making their money w/ out a tip

I've had many cars tinted over the years. I have always tipped using the same formula: Take the total amount due, minus the sales tax, and multiply by 0%. :p

Seriously though, I don't understand why people would tip for something like this. Doing the job right is what I'm paying for in the first place. The only exception I can think of is if someone went out of their way for you such as staying late to meet your deadline, or installing moleskin at no extra charge, etc.

Just don't get caught. Your 20% is illegal.

Why tip for that kind of service? Not necessary.

Any why put foreskin on your tinted windows? :p

Anyone tint windshield?

I'm taking my '05 sedan to a tint shop tomorrow to see if the top 6" of the windshield can be tinted. I called and the guy said he may have problems because of the rain/light sensor. I'm also worried about the light gray cloth covering the A-pillar trim. I'm afraid the liquid will stain it. Anyone know how to remove them? I thought I had read where you remove a plug and the screw underneath it, but mine don't have any plugs. Has anyone had any problems getting the top of their windshield tinted?

thanks!
Jim

I've gone one further and tinted the entire windscreen (no law against that in Thailand) with 100% tints all round. No problem with the rain sensor as my tint guy accurately cut around the water sensor unit. Tint guys should lay the tint to measure and cut on the outside of the windshield first anyways so getting it accurate should not be a problem.

One problem with my 100% tints though... now it's so dark in the cabin that my electrically dimming mirrors never get a chance to work anymore

Cheers,

100% Tint? Isn't that just clear glass (no tint)?

The percentage on tint is the amount of light thats allowed through, so a 30% tint is lighter than a 20% tint.

I always tip aftermarket work...and you know what, it pays off. I had my tint done and gave a tip (before-hand). They detailed the outside of my car, for free. My $20 tip got me a $70 detail job.

uhm... if it was 0% tint, then that means no light... so you might as well spray paint your windows with 17 layers of black rattle can.

Sedan also

I have a metallic based tint by Hi-Kool on my car (full windshield as well) and my sedan will not respond to the remote unless I'm pretty close to the car. I expected this to happen and thought nothing of this issue.

Cheers,

Yup. You never know when you will be back. Most of the time you get uncharged labor etc etc.

On the outside? How long does that last? I would imagine the film being exposed to the elements would quickly ruin it! Heck, just rubbing up against the rubber bumper can cause it to scratch. I can't imagine what salt, acid rain, dirt, grime, and bird poo would do to it.

The whole idea of a tip is to reward the worker for service that was above and beyond what was paid for. I'd have no problem tipping a tinter if they detailed my car (and that wasn't part of the service). I just don't think I would do this before the work was done. To me, you are just paying for some extra service, and then, I would expect the extra service. If you tipped $20 before hand, and then picked up your car to find that they just did the tint work, and nothing else (what if they were busy and didn't have time), then what value did you get for the $20? To me this is charity.

If I was in that situation, I may have given them $20 extra at the beginning and said something like "please take care of my car, make sure it stays clean". If I were to return to find out they did a $70 detail on it, THEN I would probably give them a tip (on top of the $20) because they went above and beyond what I paid them (the $20) to do.

For those who wish that their key fob worked at a longer distance, try placing the fob against your head and then pushing the button. I know it sounds weird, but it does work. It won't give you unlimited distance, but it will increase the distance that you can use your key fob. This may or may not help with the tint issue.
