Tints

Hey Harry, does that coupe you posted have blue tints or just photoshopped? If yes, what type of tints are those? Look very nice though.

This is all good info, but why not just ask your tint installer to use moleskin tint protector in the window seals? This is pretty standard for install shops. If you are doing the tint yourself then I can see doing this yourself.. otherwise when setting up your tint install ask for moleskin window liners.. It was less than $100, I think around $50? and I didn't have to mess with taking my door panels off.. Let them do it..

I like to DIY.. but not window tint.. I don't have the patience..

Removing the door panels is not that hard. It's actually pretty easy. The way its designed is so that you can't mess anything up. I had to take them of in my acura and that was a royal pain. The benz was much easier. No need to cry in the corner.

I'm not sure about the coupe, but my sedan only involved 4 screws, and every thing else was held in by clips. Really it takes less than 10 minutes. I know the guy selling them said that he couldn't reveal the directions as it is part of the kit you pay for. I understand why you would want to see pictures first, but unless your really bad with cars, its should be a piece of cake.

Why you ask?
Because most tint places don't have a clue about moleskin.
I've been wanting to get tint since I got the car, but could never find anyone who knew about that, or the issue with the coupe with the antenna...it's behind the glass somewhere, and if they get water in there, it fries it, and you have to pull the glass to replace it.
If I could just find someone who had a clue....

Every tint shop i called had not clue what moleskin was. Had no choice to do the moleskin myself.

Ditto...and door panel "PARTIAL" removal is very easy (once you realize what needs to be done). Lets make it clear that it doesn't come all the way off which some might believe and be wary of.

How is the partial removal of the door panel done? I want to retint my windows because they are all scratched, but the two tint shops I've been too don't do moleskin. If its easy enough, I might as well do it myself.

really? one day i pulled the srs badge and unscrewed a couple things but it just didn't seem to be coming off easily. i just felt like i was going to damage the trim, snap something plastic, rip the leather with the screwdriver or worse, break the door mechanism so that my door would not close or lock properly in the future.
has anyone ever posted a DIY on how to remove the door panels?

I went to Tint Devil on Miramar Rd. in San Diego. They do excellent work and I highly recommend them. I didn't even think of doing the moleskin until they recommended it.. lol They charge a little more but it is well worth it.

Also make sure to get non-metallic tint.. Otherwise your nav and am radio reception will be screwed..

Its simple...

Roll window down.
Unscrew door lock pin.
remove srs badge, torx screw behind it.
remove the door lock latch, torx screw
the door handle you will need to pry off from the bottom of the the split. I suggest using a like butter knife wrapped in a very thin cloth. It comes off, violently, but it will pop off. 2 torx screws in there. Torx screws are size 25 & 30.

Pop the tweeter cover off by prying from the hinge side back towards the rear

The start prying the door panel and the bottom and soon you will hear the plastic clips (about 6-8) pop loose. Be careful, some rubber washers may fall to the ground that you'll need. Start at the bottom, work around to the sides.

Now this is perhaps is the most difficult. The door panel lifts up toward teh top of the car. I swung mine out from the bottom back & forth a few times to work the seal loose. Don't swing too much ..like maybe 5-6 inches. Then start pulling it upwards from the tweeter end of the panel.

Once it is off, pull out the inner door seal, apply moleskin and then reverse steps.

I have been searching for a place in OC as well (preferably South Orange County) Most places are unaware of the problems associated with tinting MBZ vehicles. Let me know what you find.

My buddy got his CLS done in Laguna Hills all the way around for roughly $200. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and I'll keep you informed for whatever I find.

If you set me up with some padres tickets at petco and a room at the W I'm game.

On a serious note my cousin coaches a youth football team that is supposed to play a scrimage before the chargers game this weekend. I might just be going down.

Sun Shield

If you don't mind driving to the SFV, Sun Shield on Van Nuys in Sherman Oaks is a reputable place. I just had my 05 Granite Grey C230 done there on Monday. Had 35% on the doors and 20% on the rear window for $185 out the door WITH MOLESKIN. They used Llumar film, but they also carry Suntek and Madico as well. Looks classy. Applied very nicely.

Stickercity is right across the city as well if you are interested in a clear bra, stickers, or blacking out any of your car's lights.
