I believe the 1.8L engine takes 5.8 quarts of oil.
Look in the manual,

Why are you using 10w40? Use the recommended one in the manual.

I used 6 bottles but did not put all 6. I used 5.5-5.6 by measuring with the Oil Boy extractor which was a great tool to get the oil out.

What information is provided on pages 2 through 5 of your manual titled: "Factory Approved Service Products June 2004" that is in the Owner's Manual case?

MB/AMG recommand 0w-40...but you can use 10w-40. the engine will be quieter, however you'll most likely feel it's harder to rev the engine.

0w-40 makes my engine quiet for about 2k miles then it gets loud as usual.

My manual contains explicit definitions for three oils that are acceptable for usage on MY 2005 vehicles.

According to the manual, if this information is followed, "engine damage is possible, which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty."

The manual titled: "Factory Approved Service Products June 2004", which was included with my MY 05 C320 Sports coupe does NOT agree with that statement.

Is there MB documentation, which is more current than the manual that I referenced, which states either that Mobil 1 10W-40 is acceptable or that any synthetic oil is acceptable, for usage in MY 05 vehicles?

LOL...if you want to get stuck with using only 0w-40 all the time, be my guest. The car's not limited to run just 0w-40. You can choose different grades depending on the climate.

just wondering if you know what the number actually means if the only thing you know is to follow the manual?

Are you saying synthetic oil is not recommended/acceptable? Am I missing something on this thread? I use 0W-40 Mobile 1 but my car was delivered and given 4 'free' oil changes with 20W-50 because that's all they had at the dealer in the 50 gal drums. I doubt the engine or anyone listening to it could tell the difference. If I lived in extreme climate (Phoenix or Alaska)I might be more picky.

so the manual says 0W-30...

my car just said to add a quart and I know the dealer put in 0W-30. so I went to pep boys and they didn't have it, they said they never heard of 0W-30 and asked what car I had and they were like that's why.

now, I'm not sure if I should just take it to any local dealer...

I drove it at least 200 miles after it said add oil b/c I was in Barstow driving from Vegas home (the dealer said it would be ok), but now I'm like I don't have time to take it to my normal dealer till friday, do you guys think it'll be fine? or, where do I buy 0W-30? thanks!

Dude, you want 0W-40. Stop in at Kragen, they have it. I keep an extra qt in the back next to my spare xmas tree air freshener. Never a good idea to run with low oil.

The oil should meet MB 229.5 specification. Look on the back of the oil bottle. Only Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the specification. Other bottles are confusing because they say that Mercedes uses Mobil 1.

You have a very nice looking car, a beaut, why not treat it to a $5 bottle of oil?

one more (stupid) question, I could have sworn that I saw on the invoice that the dealer put in 0W-30, if that's true, then will adding 0W-40 mess anything up or be bad? thanks!

No, won't hurt anything, as all synthetics mix together well. The difference between 30 and 40 is small, but the 0W-40 oil might have an improved additive package to meet the tough MB 229.5 spec. The dealers computer is probably not current, or a loose nut on the keyboard pushed the wrong button. They should all be using 0W-40 on 2005 cars.
