1999 CLK320 (sold), 2007 C230 SS (gone), 2000 Grand Marquis, 2011 CR-Z, stay tuned...
Oh great. I had issues (electrical) with my sunroof in my CLK... had to be reset all the time. If it's not even that bad, I should be ok with it. Thanks Matt!

Yeah my dealership had to "reprogram with SDS" in regards to my sunroof not auto-closing. It hasn't had an issue since, and I use it almost daily.

If you meant that for me, sorry - I thought you were talking to the OP. Unfortunately I can't tell you as it was under warranty and cost me $0. I get the impression it didn't take too long, though. It was adjusted ".1" of something.
The issue was when you tried to auto-close it, it would almost close then bounce back. Did this for months but hasn't done it again since the reprogram.

That's why I deleted sunroof from the options list when I ordered my car - only US$ 450 at that time. Webasto is supposed to make the best sunroofs around but everyone I know has had trouble. Pity - I live in sunroof country.

Sunroof fixed...sort of
In my earlier post I wrote about my sunroof being stuck a couple inches up on the drivers side. I messed with it enough to get the back of the passengers side up and was able to take the screws out that hold the glass on. After I removed the sunroof I had access to the guides and brackets. I could see a few parts that run thru the guide that were worn out and not sliding down into the final closed position. I think these parts are part of the entire guide ($360). The lever and bracket I saw that was broken (in my original post) was just one side of the front window vent that pops up when sunroof is open ($90). It still works with only one. The problem I discovered after I got the glass off was the two guide brackets were not in sync with each other...when the passenger side was all the way forward the driver side was about 4 inches back. That is why when I tried to close the sunroof the drivers side remains up. Solution: pop off dome light cover, locate the two levers that allow you to drop down entire switch assembly which gives you access to the sunroof motor. There are two places for manual crank. One on the right is for the sunscreen, one on the left for the sunroof. Use torx socket and rachet to crank sunroof...no need for special MB wrench). Crank sunroof shut...keep cranking even though it sounds like you are stripping gears (its just a clutch). After a few cranks the slack is taken up between the two brackets that are offset and drivers side will close. You can also close your suncreen with the right crank if you want to. After I got the suncreen closed the switch worked to open and closed the sunscreen. So my problem with the sunroof is sort of fixed in that I got it closed and that's the way it will stay! But at least I know I can fix it myself by purchasing the parts and taking the glass off and replacing from the top and not have to drop the headliner down like MB dealership told me.

Eventually I hope to have a central repository of stuff, DIY's and links etc.
But for the next 2 weeks, all I care about is passing my classes.

My roof has the drivers side tilted up, I was able to force it closed with the crank, how did you access the screws/bolts holding the glass on? My motor makes the clicking noise, if I push up on motor while cranking I can get glass to close.
I called my local Webasto dealer they want $85 an hour to work on it.
Which bolts do I remove in picture to access the motor to check gear out?

Just came across this,... general steps on how to remove panoramic sunroof of coupe. Its a demo video, very general,... but its a free sample.
Go here:
http://www.mercedestechstore.com/203.htm
- click on "Sample before you buy"
- in pop up window, click on "SAMPLE Click Here - Body" in upper left
Hmmm,... now if we can figure out how to remove the rear window along with the two rear side windows,... we'd have a pretty decent convertible!

CL203 Pano-roof Gears
Since the ears in the pano's motors are plastic and tend to break over time, I thought that what happened to mine. I talked to my neighbor about it and he said I could give him the gears and he will have one of his co-workers make a set of metal ones. He is supposedly a really good machinist. I am not sure how long or the cost yet but wanted to see whats the interest on here for you guys.
Who would be interested in purchasing a set?

So after searching and reading through this thread, I think I have a problem not discussed yet...
I have a 2002 C230 Coupe. When I press the button to open the roof, the shades open, the roof tilts up, and then that's it. The roof doesn't make another sound as if it were straining, trying to open. I got the car used, and this is how I got it.
So, all I have is the sunshade and tilt functions. Any ideas?

I'm gonna ask a dumb question,... Did you go through the Owner's Manual on how to operate the sunshade & Panoramic roof? You'd be surprise how many people would buy a Mercedes Benz and do not bother to read and understand the Owner's Manual. I got my used,... the previous owner knew that the sunshade open and closes,... but wasn't aware that the Panoramic Roof also open and closes!
That Panoramic roof/sunshade button switch works in two different modes. It slides forward and backward,.... and also the back part of the button is pushable upward and downward. My suggestion, with the sunshade closed, open the sunshade by sliding and holding that button switch backward until the sunshade is fully open then release the button switch. Now sunshade should be open and panoramic roof closed. Now do the same sliding and holding that button switch backward again,.... panoramic roof should tilt up and open until you release button.
If panoramic roof only tilts and doesn't open,.... and there's no motor sound, you probably have problem with motor or fuse. But since it does tilt anyways, fuse and motor should be working,.. so it might be cable not pulling panoramic roof open,... but doesn't cable pull it to tilt? Anyways,.... it sounds like your motor, fuse & cable are fine,... try playing with the button,... and reading the Owner's Manual.
BTW,... good idea to get silicon lube and lube the track and all moving parts.

That silly gear wearing out is likely the weakest link in the pano system.
I have had my roof closed shut for some time now.

I wonder why Webasto don't make that gear of a different material. Is there any recommended maintenance on the roof that reduces the load on the weak gear?

I have same exact problem with my pano roof. Driver side stays up while passenger side closed. I can close it manually, however would like to fix it so I can use it (this roof is pretty nice feature on this car). I got the car new in '03 and driven only 37k. The roof was not used much, about 50 times or less. Is it possible to get this gear I see on one of the posts, or did you get it fixed and provide some detail/info to help me get started? Daytona Beach dealer estimated $4,200 for complete replacement of the roof only, haha, crazy. Thankfully this forum has so much good info, I was actually able to close it manually which I thought was impossible at first.

I noticed the first couple of years I had my car that the motor had to strain to start the roof tilting if I hadn't opened it for a while (months). The roof edge seemed to be stuck to the seal below. I've been puttiing silicone on the rear under edge of the roof and the seal rubbers along the track because I think it reduces the strain on the motor and gears. Your results may vary.
I recognise that this won't do anything for the problem of a roof that closes with one side still up, but it seems like cheap preventative maintenance for those whose roof still works.

I think I on the way to getting mine fixed. Talked with a guy last week who has worked on a few of these.
#1 - He said don't forced it close - the worst thing you can do for the gears, cables and track because it is probably something stuck in the track causing your problem. which sounds about right because I used to park under a tree while having lunch with the sunroof open.
#2 - Put me in contact with an OEM remanufactured distributor to buy a sunroof assembly. Yes you want to know how much? $200
#3 - He is supposed to get started next week - said he will do the job for $300. So I will keep everyone posted
