Emergency Brake "Pop"

Emergency Brake "Pop"
Yesterday, when I went to put on my emergency brake, i heard a pop and now the emergency brake doesn't engage. When I push down on the pedal, theres not even any resistance. My guess is either a spring broke in the brake assembly or the cable broke or disconnected somewhere along the line (according to this post it is somewhat common - https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...=brake+parking ). Anybody got other ideas? How does the cable connect to the rear brake(s)? I have no clue how the ebrake mechanism is layed out in this car.
Looks like there is a DIY on the Emergency Brake Disassembly (https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...rake+emergency), but I can't find it (http://www.installuniversity.com/mb/w203/w203.html)
Thanks for any responses.

There's a cable that connects to the release handle under the dash that goes to a cable yoke under the rear seat and the two ends of that cable go to each wheel. There's been some posts about the cable becoming disconnected inside a brake drum which makes both sides not work. Sometimes this is caused by the wheel lug bolts being too long? Did you recently have a flat tire?

guys, come on...of course i read through the threads i linked to!
those posts seem to address a 'sticking' brake (dirty/needs lube) rather than the brake failing altogether.
anyway, i'm hoping the cable just slipped out of the 'yoke' or whatever under the rear seat. i guess it'll make more sense once i take look in there. if the cable itself snapped, well i guess i'm screwed.
if its the assembly itself in the hub it sounds like it'll be $$$ and a PITA to fix. my biggest issue here is that i have no clue how the cable connects to the rear wheels and how to access the assembly itself in the hub. anybody got any tips or diagrams on this?
mleskovar, no i didn't have a flat or the wheels/lug bolts tampered with recently.
thanks for your insights!

If there's no resistance it could be anything, from a broken cable to a desingaged linkage. You won't be able to troubleshoot it unless you dig into it. The e-brake mechanism is fairly simple...you'll see once you dissasemble the rear wheels(something that you'll have to do anyhow).
Don't be scared and tackle it. Good luck!

the section that deals with the E-brake might be helpful for govertime.

I can look on my CD later...I have read that the actual FOOT MECHANISM can fail...Here are some pictures...
It is in the Service Booklet to condition and maintain the parking brake once a year...Here are some shots of mine...
Good luck!
