help - key problem

Has anyone ever had this problem and knows its cure ?

After a drive, I switch off the ignition, pull the key out, get out
of car and try to lock car using the remote key button, but nothing happens. I then have to re-insert the key back into the ignition several times before the remote key works. This is getting to be a nuisance.

Thanks

Does your spare key do the same thing?

Your batteries may be needing replacement, the battery contacts on the key fob may not making good contact, the key fob is failing or you may have to many keys on the key fob. The problem may be the vehicle.

Agree with the last post. It may be a coincidence that putting the key back in the ignition several times "makes" it work. I'm not sure there's any correlation. I had a problem with opening doors after owning my car for only a few months. I replaced the key batteries (see manual - pretty simple) and have not experienced a problem again. When you open the battery compartment on the key, you'll see the flimsy metal "fingers" which hold the batteries in place.

key problems

Yes, both keys face the same problem. Replaced batteries on both keys few months ago but problem still persist. I noticed when i insert the key back into the ignition, sometimes theres no 'reaction' hence why have to reinsert a couple of times.

However, I have no problem starting the car at all.

I bought to car from parallel importer (not main agent) so not getting the proper support on this.

Just out of curiosity is there a certain area where you have difficulty, such as only in your drive way or at work. Or is it consistently malfunctioning?

As my other car has trouble unlocking via remote around areas where mobile phone tower are insight, although it isnt an mb.

key problems

Thanks guys for all the response. I am from Singapore.
The problem I have occurs daily. I think I will bring the car
to main dealer eventho that will mean I have to pay equivalent about us$ 400 just to register ! and let them check it out.
I suspect It must be the ignition module thats faulty.

happy driving

Don't make that conclusion until it is looked at by the techs you may find it maybe something minor.

Hi fcdry,

Have you sent your car to the main dealer (C&C)? If not, you may want to try "re-setting" the remote - the procedure is in the manual. It works for my SLK - don't know whether its the same for the C-Class.

Good luck.

fcdry: check the serial number on your key near the panic button. if it doesn't start with 221 then your key is faulty. this is a known issue.

Not really, both of my original keys are 217 series and they work flawlessly!

Numbers???

Where are the numbers located again? I just got my keys a year ago (2002 W 203) and i don't see anything. I use to have a problem with it not working and then working sometimes. I just usually pulled out the metal key and played around with it, then the buttons worked! That's all I've got!

On the side surface adjacent to the red Panic button you'll read some engraved numbers. The first 3 numbers.

Key

Thanks for advise mate. I have not brought the car to C&C because of their registration fee. I have tried several times re-setting keys but it's still giving me problems. Guess I have to live with it.

You need to use spell check and better capitalization.

Both my keys are 217 as well and I've had the car since 10/2001, never had a problem with my keys.

Same here, no problem with my 217 key, my wife has the update with the trunk button. The only problem in the past, is the contacts inside the infrared transmitter.
