Don't worry about your English.

I said DO NOT use Dexron 3 or 6 in the 722.6 transmission. It is NOT approved by Mercedes Benz.

Use only products meeting Benz 236.10 or 236.12 approval.

Please buy the correct fluid from your Mercedes Benz dealer for your 722.6 transmission

If your dealer says you can use Dexron 3 or 6 they are WRONG! (NOT CORRECT)

Quote: I am Italian, I'm not good at speaking English .. : ( My car is diesel.
it is strange because the nag it mounts dexron3 of of varied marks... agip,castrol,mobil1,valvoline etc..
I do not understand because dexron6 is not suitable.
attention, the technical cards of the dexron6 say that it can replace the dexron3 dearly.I am confused...

my car uses: "Castrol TQ-DIII or TQ-D, Agip DexronIII or ATF II D , Tamoil ATF II D." -> here because I do not understand in order which reason cannot replace with dexron6
Dexron 6, just because superseded Dexron III, is not enough to use replacing Dexron III even if the oil company says it is compatible.
On top of it, Mercedes improved over the original specifications for 722.6 transmissions with the 236.10 first, and the 236.12 more recently.

So, the only oils recommended by Mercedes for your transmission are:
1. Mercedes Benz 236.10 ATF, sold at the dealers.
2. Fuchs Titan R134 ATF.
3. Shell R134 ATF.
There are no substitutes and no confusion about it. Forget Dexron 6.

Ciao, JV.

The only products that you can substitute for the 236.10 or 236.12

is the new long life 236.14 product. Example Fuchs Titan 4134

236.14 products were developed for longer life & more consistent gear change on the NAG2 722.9 7G - 7 speed auto transmission. The 234.14 product is backward compatible.

BTW - Love Italy. I could happily retire in Tuscany

my question is why do the still see the older fluid They say to use the newer fluid but still make the old one very odd. I can't wait to get my transmission flushed again but at 152k i want to keep it going.

Trey - because Benz in their usual fashion have conflicting recommendations in the market place where they say that the 722.6 can use either fluid but the 722.9 must use the latest fluid. The 722.6 is still going to give you good service life on the old fluid changed every 60,000Km/38,000 miles.

The new fluid is longer life/has greater oxidation stability & maintains shift quality for longer. It still requires to be changed at the same interval but will behave better & more consistently over it's lifespan.

I've also made the jump to Fuchs 4134 in my 722.6. At first I was a little unhappy with the feel but after a couple more drain and fills and more precise method of measuring the level, everything seems to feel normal again.

I do have 1.5 qts leftover if anyone wants it.

FEBI 22806
Although I see the MB list with approved fluids, my mechanic put Febi 22806 put in my AT today. I had a small AT pan leak, so replacing gasket and fluid with filter. Mechanic says it meets MB 236.10 and it also states so on the bottle/label. The bottle clearly indicates MB approval 236.10.
Not only does all of this worrie me, it seems as though I will need to get that fluid replaced.
The dilemma now would bewhether after draining it will leave too much of the non-listed (non approved) oil and if there is any danger of it?

236.1 fluid is not going to damage your tranny - It just won't last as long as the latest fluid. The 236 family of products are all miscible with one another. Run Max 39,000 miles & change again to the latest fluid. If it worries you reduce to your 26,000 mile service. Presume you are servicing every 13,000 miles?

Well, this is really good news. I will no doubt replace it sooner rather than later, probably just as soon as I find the new recommended fluids locally.
Am I correct that my 04' e320 4matic W has the 722.6 designation for the AT?
This was the fist AT fluid change - at 55k miles.
Thanks again.

Yes - You have the 722.6 5 speed. Tough transmission. Please service ever 60,000Km or 39,000 miles like ROW including filter and you will enjoy long life from it. Very long life.

Ok, so please forgive my ignorance here....

I want to do a transmission FULL flush & filter change in my 2004 C230 Kompressor.

This car IS in fact a 5-speed automatic, correct?

Is there a cooler line, such as a return line I can tap into? I ask, because I did this on my Ford pickup truck. I just attached a fish-tank clear-acrylic tube to the RETURN line, turned on the truck, and kept adding fluid to the tranny. Had a friend in the driver's seat go through all the gears, P, N, D, R, etc. Of course we did this after changing to a new filter.

Is there a way to do this method on my car?

Also, what fluid is the recommended fluid for the C230 Kompressor?

This thread has a lot of information, and quite frankly I'm overwhelmed.

What quantity does this vehicle take, and where can I view the level? (Since there's no dipstick?!)

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any and all help.

Vlad - please use 236.14 fluid in your tranny in future. The cheapest & most available is Fuchs Titan 4134 - Unfortunately not $5 a bottle. See Benz directive below. If you want all the reasons I will give to you but I've posted before.

Yours is a 722.6 5 speed. Use Fuchs Titan 4134. You need a service dipstick & IR thermometer to get the level right. Standard change = 4/5 quarts/liters - Flush = +- 14 quarts/liters.

See method below & splinter & C230 Sports Coup all things transmission threads for practical tips on level setting.

RMeuropean have it for $10.91 a quart

Go Benz 2006 & type in "fluid" - it does not come up under transmission.

How does "NAG1" = 722.6 compatible?

Why is this a problem?
You have a 2004 with 5 speed correct?
If so than this is the correct stuff yes?

The Mercedes-Benz 722.6 transmission, also known as the NAG 1 (New Automatic Gearbox 1st Version) or 5G-Tronic, is an electronically controlled (shift by wire) transmission. It is used in the 1997 – 2003 models.

NAG 1 was the first designation of the 722.6 in it's many initial forms. It has progressed from there.

Trust Todd to muddy the water. Yes the 236.10 product is OK for this transmission. The 236.14 product is better - see splinter's post above.

All I am suggesting is that people use the newer high performance fluid as you do in your old banger. There are benefits in doing so.
