Transmission oil level

I searched but could not find anything definitive.

My 2002 C320 wagon had a leak in the transmission line to the cooler. I don't know how much fluid I lost. How do I check the transmission fluid level?

Thanks

Henry

you have to buy the dipstick online or at your dealer. if you had a leak i would take it to the dealer and have them fix it now rather than wait for the dipstick unless of course you have a second car to get around in. lol i just looked at your list of cars lol never mind. There is a thread on changing the fluid that will help you search if I find the link I will post back. It will also have the dip stick pn and lint to buy it.

Thanks for the info. The dipstick I've read about here seems to be a universal unit that just goes to the bottom of the pan and you measure the level that way. Is that what you are talking about. These appear not to have any markings and can not be left in the car. The leak started when I drove it up north (300+ miles). It appeared to be from one of the hoses connected to the cooler. I had to drive the car home and when I got back it was not leaking anymore. It either sealed itself or I'm too low on fluid. I don't really want to drive it until I can confirm the level.

Any link or part no. would be greatly appreciated.

That is what he is talking about & level is temperature sensitive so make sure you can measure temp.

This might help until you get the tool...it's not universal, it's trans specific. You'll also need to replace the pin that locks in the trans fill tube cap that you break off when removing it. You can hold the cap on with tape until you get the pin, it's not critical. The other pictures are of the end of the tool...it's a long flexible shaft that you push down the trans fill tube until it bottoms. The two notches at the end of the tool are max and min for cold, and the two above it are max and min for hot (80C). Measure with engine running.

The latest sticks sold in SA are for all 722 series transmissions - 5 & 7 speed.

At the risk of plagiarizing…722.6xx dipstick.

With all due respect to the numerous valuable contributions of Mr. Ruck, the yanks’ seven speed transmissions are filled – and their fluid level verified – via a standoff spout in the pan, as they’ve no conventional filler tube per se.

My most sincere & humble apologies to the forum, the OP, Mark & John. I suffered brain fade & misunderstood a recent reading.

I am well aware that the 722.9 (7G) transmission is filled from below by the "overflow" method & has no dipstick tube although I'm told one is being contemplated for ease of servicing & checking levels in leak situations - still to occur if at all.

The new universal dipstick is for transmissions 716.5, 722.6, 722.7, 722.8 and is not for sale to the public. Only MB in house workshops. They think we are stupid & will foul up using it.

For the public - separate dipsticks will continue to be sold for 722.6 only & another for 716.5, 722.7, 722.8 units.

Hope this clarifies my f@@@@@ - up
