Smoked Tailights

Spent some time looking around for some W203 smoked tailights but no luck, so decided to do the job myself. Masked up, 2 coats of transparent black let dry for 24 hours, then 2 coats of clear lacquer. I quite like the look as suits my black car. Click to enlarge.

Look great! I wanted to do the same thing. Did you take the lights off your car or just masked it all around? Also what brand did you use for the spray on stuff?

Nice! See if you can get some clear/stealth bulbs for the turn signals to get rid of the orange.

Yes, took lights off only four small nuts holding tailight in 8mm ring spanner. The spray i used was 'Black Racing' mini air spray 2 cans brought mine locally but the website on the package is www.sumex.es Clear lacquer was also brought locally. Think its best to take lights off unless you have a dust free garage and you can spray without getting runs. I sprayed mine flat to ensure even coats. Hope that helps.

I will think about that one. Not sure regarding UK law as indicators (turn signals) are normally orange.

3rd brakelight done - easy mask up and quick spray. Thanks now matches up to the taillights.

Same thing here, but they make a type of bulb with a mirrored coating that still lights up the orange color.

I usually hate smoked taillights...but those are the cleanest set I've ever seen. They actually look like they were designed to go with the original design of the car.

Good job. I'm impressed.

There's a DIY from a few years ago where a bunch of people smoked their tails. It looks sharpest on black cars, but don't forget that it's illegal in many states in the U.S. I tinted mine to a much much darker shade of red and it looks great. Smoke my corners as well as the lenses over my mirrors to jet black.

I have never liked the film but to each his own Tinting the tails is painless as long as you have a steady hand. If you over apply, then you have to wet sand it down etc...... It really isn't as difficult as some people make it sound. Hardest part is probably making sure you tape off the clear sections etc, unless you want to tint those sections only.

I know Florida is one, because I have been in my buddy's 335 when he was getting a ticket for his tails being completely smoked. It's a safety thing because when you smoke it, the lenses don't reflect nearly as much light.... someone who is an attorney will have to chime in on this one perhaps, but I would guess that it's in the same line as vehicle height requirements, etc

on the topic of smoked taillights, i recently tinted mine with vht nite shades spray and its really really dark. the light from the bulbs dont really shine through very well. instead of lightening the tint by wetsanding some of it off, can i possibly get brighter bulbs that'll better penetrate the tint?
