C230 Engine cover removal and oil filter

It drives me crazy that I can't figure out how to take this car apart on my own.

Does the entire car "snap" together without fasteners or what? I afraid to just yank on a part and end up breaking something. Anyway...

How do I take off that grey and black plastic cover over the intake manifold?

Where is the oil filter?

Do I have to remove part of the plastic "belly-pan" in order to access the oil drain plug? I'm not changing the oil myself (untill 60k miles) but I'd figure I'd ask now.

There are no fasteners visable on the interior of the car. How do I remove trim pieces (generally)?

The oil filter is on the top left front of the engine. It is not a cannister; it is a cartridge type. Mercedes dealers do not use the drain plug. The oil is sucked out the dip stick tube.

The oil filter cartridge is under the gray plastic cover then. How does one get that off. I note that the power steer pump/resevior is under there too. I've got the same question, how does the cover over the intake manifold come off?

Lynn, I realize MB uses a suction pump system to remove the old oil, but I've read here that there is also a drain plug. I believe that MB uses the suction system only to eliminate having to utilize a vehicle lift and to make the oil change faster and more efficient for them.

We have also been told that they suck out the oil to avoid damage to the oil pan drain plug threads. So, yes, there is a drain plug. I don't know if the belly pan has to be removed. If it does, that is another reason the dealers use the siphon.

In case anyone is still wondering about this:

Yes- the belly pan has to be removed to access the drain plug. In fact, about 10 screws and two belly pans have to be removed to access the plug. If I decide to change the oil myself, I'll definitely be getting a siphon (or fashioning a "hatch" on the belly pan to access the plug).

FYI- I had to remove both pans to clean empty the 1/2 quart of oil that I "spilled". There's some cool stuff to look at under there but I wouldn't want to take those panels off every time I changed the oil.

-or-

Just pop the covers off yourself. Pull up while wiggling them and they pop off. It'd be pretty hard to break them so don't worry about that. You'll be able to see all the fine German engineering under there first hand.

Recently had the oil in my wife's Dodge minivan (now related to MB) changed at a mechanic's drive through. The threads on the drain plug were stripped on an earlier visit to the same place.

Don't know if this is true or just BS, but the mechanic there told me that Daimler/Chrysler is using very thin metal on their oil pans and they are subject to stripping, because the threads a cut very shallow (ie, not "full cut" threads). It costs about $100 to replace the oil pan and plug on the minivan... I shudder to think what it would cost on an MB.

So, if there is any truth to what Lynn has heard about siphoning the oil to avoid drain plug thread damage, then I think that "clue" is another reason to buy a siphon if you must change the oil yourself.

Yeah, I had the same thing on my crx. Jiffy Lube finally stripped my plug. Serves me right for not taking ten minutes to do it myself. Cost a couple of hundred for a new pan. Damn!

avlis,
Didn't you take a lot of photos of your engine with the covers off? Is there a thread that shows them all? I meant to copy the photos for future use but forgot.
Thanks,
Andy

There are pictures in my album. You'll have to sift through to find what you're looking for.

Chrysler is by no means the only company to use thin material on their oil pans. You run this risk with dang near any car made these days.

If you use the suction device on any 4-cylinder Kompressor motor, be sure to pinch off the rubber hose that connects to the dipstick tube, or nothing will get sucked out.
