Anyone have recommendations for a good tire shop near in the bay area? Costco has the rears for $209 including install.

Question RE: spare tire for C230K
I have a 2005 C230K sedan. Recently, a rear tire blew up because of low pressure due to a nail puncture. To my surprise, the spare tire was a doughnut tire. I assumed when I bought the car the a Mercedez would come with a full size spare tire. Is it a good idea to have a full size tire as a spare? Have any of you done this?
Also, is it true that the dealer can activate the sensor for "Tire low pressure"?
Your feedback is appreciated.
Happy New Year!!

I would always want a full-sized spare if possible since I can drive faster and farther with it than the doughnut. Nothing like limping 300 miles home on a doughnut from BFE.
If you do move to a full-sized spare use the front tire size for the spare the so it will work front or back.

yep. that was my logic. i reason that if you're going to fix the tire and mount it back again, it doesn't matter what size the spare tire is because you would only use it temporarily.

Tire Rotation Shops
Hey guys,
I'm coming up on 5k in my '06 C230 SS, and after calling my dealer to ask how much it would cost to rotate/balance my tires, they quoted me $70!!!
Since I got the 2006 model year, my car doesn't come with the free maintenance deal that I think the 2005's get. I called a couple other Benz dealerships around town, and they all gave me the same price quote.
Who do ya'll use for your tire rotations? Places like Discount Tires will do it for much less, but do ya'll trust non-dealerships doing work on a Benz, even if it's something "simple" like rotating/balancing tires?
I'd do it myself, but I don't have that kind of time.....
Just thought I'd ask!
Thanks!

Try Tire Rack for a list of authorized installers, in your area.
They were helpful with locating a Hunter GSP9700 Road Force wheel balancing machine. There are three in my area. This device measures wheel and tire runout and compresses the tire to attain the best balance.
This is an advanced device and many installers do not use the extended features. This balancer permits "splitting" a weight, to hide them behind spokes. This requires a few simple menu selections, but having them use this feature has been hit-or-miss.

Blew a tire going 80 mph
I blew my back left tire going 80 down the interstate tonight at 12 am. The car kept perfectly straight as I came to a stop, as if there were no tire blown at all! What a amazing vehicle!
However, there was some difficulty in getting the tire off, as corrosion had taken over. I called the mercedes customer service line and got prompt assistance within 3 minutes! He told me the correct directions for removing a tire w/ corrosion; install bolts till finger snug, then lower the can down completely and rock it back and forth to release the corrosion's hold. That didn't work, so I gave it a swift kick (former soccer player lol) and off came the tire! I sure hope the 75 year old man that this happends to doesn't have hip displacia.
Overall the experience was not that bad, as the tool box and full size spare that comes standard arrived to my rescue. I do have one question, does the ESP brake assistance play any part in keeping the vehicle straight during a blowout? What if this happened at autobahn speeds ?

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
A rear rapid deflation is not as hairy as a front tire shreading. I doubt the ESP even took over. In Europe they still use nylon in tires. While most materials expand when heated, Nylon gets smaller, so the tire grips the wheel better, and the shore hardness goes up resisting puncture. American market tires use polyester, because we are not supposed to drive over 65. As for the autobahn, you would not be driving 80mph at night. Some German would stop you and open a can of whupass on you for being stupid.
The way to prevent corrosion from locking the rim on the brake disc is to put a finger full of lanolin (wool wax) on the mating surfaces of the wheel and bolts. (An old farmers trick.)

This rear tire and wheel rapidly failed to maintain proper air pressure. There was an identical size hole in the tread.
There was no problem maintaining control at highway speeds.
