Question for Glyn. Re: Old Spec Tranny Fluid vs, new
Glyn you old codger you.
There seem to be a contingency of people who feel that
in the 5 speed auto it is best to use the old
spec transmission fluid for the 5 speed, vs. the
2 newer specs. These days the only place that sells it is places like
RMEuro and it's Febi or some other crap.
Well, my 1st flush I did exactly that, I used the old spec fluid right from mercedes.
I wasn't convinced that the new stuff was the way go especially since while, Mercedes said one was good for all and they never lie, right? they still sold 2 or 3 different formulations.
But the 2nd time around it seems that Mercedes has decided that one standard is good for all, 5 speed and 7 speed.
The new standard was labelled, ATF134.
And they stopped selling the old stuff.
That being said, it seems that there is a small contingency out there
that claim either they or someone they know had a transmission damaged by the newer style fluid.
While I don't have the all pn's, as we know several pn's have come and gone.
So, my last flush I used ATF134.
Which seems to be working OK, though I noticed today and bit of a clunk!
when I put it in reverse.
Now that being said, of course I didn't do my 1st flush till 120K mile.
and I now have 184K miles.
Whats sayest thou, oh great soothsayer of all things petroleum based?
Whats this noise about newer spec fluids causing problems?
And are they talking about ATF134 or the in between standards, that were supposed to be one size fits all?
And seriously, is it true you got into petroleum for the free Vaseline?

The 236.14 fluid is the best possible fluid in the here and now for the 722.6. See my argument with Jeffrey on the CLK forum on mis3's thread. I suspect Benz will ultimately make the 236.15 fluid mandatory for all. The earlier generation fluids are obsolete. Time moves on. mis3 has just done a half change at 150K & about to do another half change.
Anybody that had a failure on the new fluid would have had it anyway - it's all anecdotal BS. The 236.14 fluid was designed to be reverse compatible from day 1. 236.14 is the superior product.

Vaseline is a trademark of the Elida Ponds division of Unilever. I did not work for Unilever. Pharmaceutical Grade White Petroleum Jelly where I come from.
Could I suggest some uses for you?

I still have enough oil for 2 to 3 changes stored in the shed & will use that first before purchasing any more of the new generation. At our present mileage I will be 80 years old when buying more oil. Sobering thought !! I may have to ask Glyn to crawl under & drop the pan !
Thanks for the info Glyn.

Glyn,
With your vast wealth of knowledge in the Petroleum products world,
It's good to know that in a pinch I could count on you to advise me on
the many uses of Petroleum Jelly.
Just as I suspected, your knowledge extends beyond plain old motor oil, and gasoline to the many uses of the white jelly like derivative, brought about by your many years of uh.... industry experience....
Currently I am not in need any such advise,
thank you just the same.![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
But you'll be the 1st person I contact if it ever comes up.

If you insist on using the original MB 236.10 specs for your ATF,... Febi would be the one to get!
I do believe with regards to both the original MB 236.10 and the current MB 236.14 specs, Febi-Bilstein is actually the OEM to the 1 litre Mercedes-Benz ATF that the Mercedes-Benz Stealership sells. Not Fuchs Titan ATF 4134
![EEK!](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Thus, for MB 236.10 spec, if you can't find the 1 litre Mercedes-Benz labeled ATF bottle (Mercedes-Benz Part# 001 989 21 03),... then get the less expensive Febi # 22806,... and since Febi is the OEM, its really the same stuff you would be getting at the Mercedes-Benz Stealership if they still sold it.
For MB 236.14 spec, if you don't want to bend over and grab your ankles at the Mercedes-Benz Stealership while they charge you $20US ($25CAN) for each 1 litre Mercedes-Benz labeled ATF 134 bottle (Mercedes-Benz Part# 001-989-68-03),... then get the Febi # 29449 which is $13 at RMEuropean

I should point out that 236.10 is now obsolete & being totally phased out. No one will be making it & Benz will not carry it as a P/N
Shell ATF143 is available from Ryder fleet products for $5.38 a quart & many dealers now use Mobil ATF134 & charge it out at $7 a quart. Fuchs Titan 4134 is typically $10 a quart with many discount coupons available.

Matt - in case I've created a misconception:
The 236.15 fluid will not be backwards compatible. Identified by being dyed Blue.
This has been a Shell, Fuchs, Afton (old Ethyl Corp) development.
Bearings - tribo clearances, friction material etc. etc. have been changed in the 7G Plus for energy saving, less TC slip while maintaining good NVH etc. This fluid was designed with no backward compatibility in mind. Afton is the only additive supplier which is good - they know their stuff in this area.
