Speed Innovations ECU worth it?

18HP, 24TQ $420 installed for a C300.

You guys think it's worth it? It's also supposed to increase gas mileage, which is just an added bonus.

Does anyone have personal experience with Speed Innovations stuff? Any comments? Any warnings? Pros/cons?

It is certainly considerably cheaper than the Brabus power kit, but are they reputable? I would not want to mess with the car's brain, other than with something that comes from a tried and tested company.

Here's a link to the Brabus website. Navigate to tuning, then c-class and Power upgrades.

Speed Innovation did a round of cars in norcal and apparently everyone was happy with it. There are lots of testimonials and reviews on the tune on mymbonline. Although the added power is a nice boost, but honestly, I'm not gonna be racing anyone in a c300 :p. It's the 10% better mpg that really caught my eye. I believe once you get it tuned, you can take it out for a spin and if you don't like it, they can reflash your ecu to original settings.

The thing with the ECU tune is, if you bring your car in for service and they need to do a update to your ECU will get overwritten. I read on another forum that this happened to a couple people. I did read on one of the tuners site that they will re-flash your ECU for 1 year for at no charge if the dealer overwrites it. But other than asking the service dept, how would you tell if they flashed it?

I'm still thinking about it though...

The shop in Nor Cal where I was going to do this, and which AZN C300 is referring to is offering a free 2-year warranty/reflash in the case that the dealership flashes it back to OEM state.

As AZN C300 said, I'm more interested in the gas mileage than I am in the power gains. Seriously, who am I gonna be racing in my C300, and at my age?

Since this will show up in the dealer diagnostics, I wonder if dealerships generally trouble owners for having done this. Have any of you done the ECU reflash and run into drama because of warranty issues and such? Is this pretty much a dealer-by-dealer issue?

you are right though. The warranty issue was something I was worried about. However, some dealerships are mod friendly and won't just automatically blame anything and everything that goes wrong on the ECU. Still, it's a risk, but I'm banking specifically on the fact that this is a non-daimlerchrysler mercedes and a return to form of quality german engineering.

sometimes you just gotta roll the dice

The law states that the burden of proof is on the dealership to prove that something/anything that goes wrong with your car is a direct result of an aftermarket mod that you've done before they are able to deny your warranty claim.

So...

+1 to AZN-C300. I think I'll roll the dice.

p.s. How was that super long run-on sentence? It my was best impression of ATSOBE. No offense intended. Really.

The price of the upgrade to its power gain ratio is pretty good but I would request dyno sheets of the said gains.Reputable tuners have them and they do state WHP. If it is 18whp for 420 bucks, its a deal.

Sounds good on paper but try and fight a dealership in real life that refuses to fix your car. Been there and done that.

Now I am one for modifying for more power but at the same time a manufacturer has a legitimate argument if we even add 10hp and there is a trans problem for instance. I'm still pissed off but at the same time I see their point as they sold me a car to their specs and if I want to change those specs than I also need to be prepared for responsibility for any problems, whether coincidence or not.

Heres my question:

A. Is this something where you have to send in your ECU for them to MOD?

B. If something goes wrong with it, our car cant function without it correct? so how would i send it back to them?

lol at this topic.

my C32's at the dealership right now getting the insane issue of tcu going into limp mode. they also checked my ecu just in case and told me nothing's wrong with ecu, so they're looking into other possible causes. guess what tune do I have.

1. service monkeys won't know if your ECU's tuned or not until they pull up the A/F ratio. The only real part of the tune is the A/F ratio on WOT. The normal A/F ratio shouldn't even be that much different at all.

2. the only real pain in the *** is that if there are ecu updates dealership can do it without informing you. However this can easily be solved if you have a good relationship with your service advisor. My service advisor will not do any ecu flash without asking me first.

Unfortunately if you are not close to a tuner you have to send your ECU to be programmed. The ECU is on top of our engines and can easily be unplugged and shipped.

Yes you are without a car for at least a few days.

AZN

when you said "re-flush" back to original setting, you meant changing the chip back to the original one? this is not a real program flushing ECU upgrade is it? One thing I worry about doing an ECU upgrade is because of the warranty. If Speed In. ECU is not a chip replacement, then I will go for it 100%.

It's all software...like flashing your Bios....They can flash it with the SI code, and if you don't like it, revert back to the MB code. There's no SI chip if that's what you're thinking.. it's the same hardware components.

I actually had my W211 done by them 4 years ago, too.
It's not a "flush", but a chip replacement.

regarding the MB dealer. I took my car in for several services that they upgrade or flush on the ECU, but never they mention the detection of the ECU chipping or brought up any warranty issue.

But I did take my car back to Speed Inn. to get the ECU done again, just incase the dealer accidentally erase it.

Is there a way to know if the dealer has deleted (reseted) the ECU tune? (other than reeding on the service note "ECU upgrade")

i don't know.

1. your own feeling on the car being slower, but very inaccurately.
2. bring it to your Tuner to have them take a look at.
