W204 Snow Chain break brakes

Hi,

I drove from Leavenworth WA back to Seattle WA(Mountain Road and snow) and be advised that I should have a chain for my car. It is very hard to get a chain to my RWD wheel and I spent 30 minutes to put that on. After 20 minutes drive, the right side chain is broken and left on the road, so I stopped and tried to get the left one out, but it got combined with my brakes and tires, my dashboard shows Brake Fluid Level Low...Now I called the towing company and towed it back to dealer...Now the brakes don't have any resistance....

Any advice on this? I drove at most 50 feet after the warning light, would it be an easy fix or a serious brake problem?

Sounds like you snapped a brake line, time to get a 4matic.

You shouldn't require that much in repairs.. A new brake hose or 2 and a good flush with a few quarts of fluid and it should be okay as long as nothing else like speed sensor wiring was also damaged.

I chatted w/ service agent and he suggests me to file a lawsuit against manufacture and ask them to pay for my towing and repair...also, do you guys have an estimate the total cost so I can negotiate with dealer?

Well knowing the damage would help a lot with pricing.

Who installed the chains...did you have tensioners on them ? Pretty sure the chain instructions include a disclaimer for any damage that may occur from their use..

I don't personally how to install a snow chain....so several strangers at the gas station helped me install it. I do buy tensioners to tight the chain but it still broke...

The dealer took two days to diagnosis the issue and haven't got back to me, pretty sure they are planning to scam me LOL

Good luck with trying to file a lawsuit against a manufacturer when it sounds like you have no idea if they were installed correctly in the first place and from the results of what happened, it sure sounds like it might have been a case of user error.

I doubt you will be able to negotiate the price down. The damage is what it is and the labor to fix it is based on a formula, but, hey, it never hurts to ask. Just because it took a couple days to get back to you doesn't automatically mean they are trying to scam you. Sounds like you had the car towed in without an appointment and maybe it just took a little while before they could fit you in. If you feel they are trying to cheat you, you can always take it somewhere else. At least wait until they come back to you with their damage estimate before you freak out too much.

Good luck, I hope it can get resolved easily and cheaply.

Thanks for the info. I would wait until they reply me back with detailed breakdown of the repair cost...based on my experience, I could always ask for 15-20% off based on the quoted price. And usually after the required parts, they would recommend you to perform things like changing a brake pad(I changed it around 15 months ago and only 10K miles on the new pads).

The dealer replies and I don't think the cost is reasonable:

Unfortunately, I'm unable to provide labor and parts breakdown since we charge by job done.

Here you can find full breakdown;

Rear Brake Hose: $221.50

Right Rear Spring Control Arm: $414.97

Right Rear Tie Rod End: $521.35

Right Rear Thrust ARM [PUSHING STRUT EPC]: $323.70

Brake Fluid Flush: $178.20

Associated Hardware [with the repairs mentioned above]; $262.83

Diagnostics + Additional Labor to clean up brake fluid spray; $247.50

Total; $2170.05 before sales tax & shop charges

wow... that's hefty.
New brake hose and brake fluid flush is must and possibly cleaning because brake fluid will eat paint on the car.
Having said that, not sure on control/thrust arm and tie-rod until visually inspected.

In summary,
look for other private mechanic. lol

Hi Guys,

Over the last few weeks, my insurance company worked closely with the dealership on negotiating the price and finally it got fixed today. When I picked up my car, I feel the brake is super super soft just as the brake line is broken.

Any idea on the potential reason for this?

They gave it back to you in that condition ? Air in the brake system, particularly if the ABS circuit wasn't bled or a continued leak in the brake lines are the only reasons that come to mind. Can't see why you would have a damaged caliper..

Yup I was surprised that it was returned in that condition. And also my front bumper has scratch underneath the plate but they refused to admit its their fault, they said it is the towing scratch. Any idea on this? I really appreciate your feedback. but

My front bumper is scratched and the dealer said it is the towing company fault, but I remember the towing guy drove my car to a plain truck.

Could you guys help me figure out the reason for scratch/cost to repair those scratch? Thank you so much!!

That looks like damage from towing.

my front bumper looks a little like that from rocks. good luck getting them to pay to repaint/ fix the whole bumper for that little damage. you could try but who knows the outcome, my bet your **** out of luck unless you pay yourself or risk your insurance going up from that.

I got my car back today and checked the underneath of the bumper and found it should be the output of the towing. I would take it to AAA preferred store tomorrow and see how it goes. Hopefully they can just use some touchup paint and do not need to rebuild the whole bumper.

Would the brake line brake the suspension system? Today I drove the car in highway and there's lots of traffic, drove around 20-30 miles per hour, I can feel the rear right side shakes unexpectedly and more frequently. Not sure whether it is because of the road or my car repair quality.
