Question 2011 C 300, ESL disable + emulator.

I want to disable my daughter's 2011 C 300 ESL. Everything is working fine but I would like to bypass the ESL before it fails with an emulator. My question is can I turn on the key so the ESL goes into the unlocked position then unplug the connector on it so it will not lock when I remove the key so I can remove the EIS for programing without causing other future problems? Thank you everyone.

I’m not sure that would work because the system still needs a signal confirming that the ESL has acknowledged the key fob. Without that, the computer won’t allow the vehicle to start.
This was my solution, I had a locksmith disable/bypass the ESL and install an emulator instead. This was done a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, it cost around $450–$50

Yes turn on the key and unplug the ESL with the key off. Then pull the ESL out of the column and plug it back in and tie wrap it up out of the way so it dont cause any issues until you can get a emulator programmed.

Yes you can do as you suggest. It is perfectly safe to unplug the ESL harness and leave the ESL in situ providing it is unlocked. However once the ESL harness is unplugged, the car will not start until you have plugged in your new emulator.

OK, just to confirm the procedure. I am going to insert the key and turn on , not start. The ESL should unlock, I will then unplug the ESL, key still in the on position. Once unplugged the ESL should remain unlocked. Then I will turn off and remove the key so I can take out the EIS for programing to the emulator. Should I disconnect the battery after the ESL is unplugged? Thank You. And yes I will leave the ESL in place with the emulator secured somewhere under the dash.

100 % correct.
Scroll to Sept 18 in the link below for instructions with photos on how I did this exact job.

Thank You gav24v your write will be so helpful. I think I need to change my sequence of operation a little. When you mentioned the noise the ESL makes I realized that I think I only have to insert the key, not turn it to unlock the ESL , right? Right after that I will disconnect the battery. I think I can remove the key without battery power. I am rapidly approaching 80 so flexibility and eyesight might slow me down a bit . With the information from forum I will get it done. I did order the EIS removal tool. Thank you to all.

Yes the key will pull out, as insertion not rotation triggers the ESL. Getting to the ESL harness means lying upside down in the foot well, and operating a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension.
