Hello,
Today I did Carplay/Android Auto retrofit to my 2016(june release) W205. The operation was actually replacing old Audio 20 with the new model. It's cost me around 900 euro(I did it at a specialised Mercedes workshop-not dealer).Everything is working ok.

That's awesome! Can you please give us more details on what they needed to purchase other than replacing the old Audio 20? I really want to attempt that but I'm worried that extra harnesses or adapters would be needed. Can you also tell us if everything still works (reverse camera, radio, etc...?)

Yes, everything is still working. I have an aftermarket camera, still working ok. They just replaced the unit, nothing else, plug and play. It took around 10 minutes to replace the unit, and about one hour to do the coding. The shop is : https://www.mbretrofit.com/ - a romanian retrofit shop.
They were saying that the operation is possible since 2 months ago, and that android auto is available only for Europe, for now.

if the above is true. a head unit and coding is the only item needed. i would still replace the card reader since it is cheap.

From middle 2017, W205 with MY808 and 522 has an option like '154' .
This 154 means that the manufacturer was changed from MELCO to PANASONIC, only for Entry models ( Audio20 ).
This new Panasonic Entry HU become NTG5s2 and has the same HW as Panasonic NTG5s1 from A, B, CLA, GLA, ML/GLE.
So, any W205, W253, V447 with Audio 20 can be retrofitted with new Entry HU. No extra harness, no new SD reader, only a new, genuine, no activated NTG5s1 Garmin SD Card for offline maps.
Any software attempts on old HU ( from MELCO ) has nothing to do with Carplay/Android Auto.
Hope this clarify all the aspects,

1. OBD2 way plug and activate CarPlay and Androidauto:
for those car models equipped with NTG5.1 (HU5S1) head unit like A, B, C, E, CLA, CLS, GLA, GLE, GLS, E class MY 2015.09+;
2. OBD2 way plug and activate CarPlay and Androidauto:
for those car models equipped with NTG5.2 (HU5) head unit like C W205 and GLC X253 MY2017.08+, the vehicles must be equipped with SPC #154
3. for old models like NTG4.5 NTG4.7 or 2015-2017 C/GLC NTG5.2 you can install our CarPlay Proxy Kit, more details refer to below link:

W205 have narrow and wide screen display, for the audio source quality we have several options as below:
1. OBD2 NTG5.2 AUX IN activator or use Mercedes Vediamo/Monaco engineering system to activate this function.
2. use USB AUX Dongle or FM channel switch to aux quality.

why did you get an aftermarket camera? do you think you can use oem old camera and it will still work with new head unit?

i think everyone needs to be patient. as far as an oem upgrade from mercedes its looking less hopeful. but whatever the 2018s have for a head unit either NTG 5.2 like us or i have heard rumors they have "downgraded" to NTG 5.1. You can just swap the head unit and reprogram and you should be able to get it no problem if you had audio 20 with or without burmeister.

yes I was offered 2 options.
1 was an android switch box to make car play work with existing head unit. Still buggy but workable
cost around 500$
2 was to get a new head unit with car play cost around 900$
i went with option 2 and have car play that works 100%
