Might stop using Royal Purple

Before the track meet we had out here in in AZ I checked my oil I found that it was down a quart so I added quart. I blew out my cats and when it was in the shop an STI rolled in for an oil change only because the owner was sick of adding a quart of Royal Purple every time between oil changes (3000miles). I also found it strange that I've had to add a quart twice now. Once during each oil change. The only reason I used RP is because the car had it in it when i bought it. I've spoken with some others who use it and I get the same thing... They seem to be down a quart before the life of the oil is up. Has anyone else had this problem? Or can some of you just humor me how use RP and go check your oil level and then chime in. Might be time to try another strange motor oil like Elf, Rendine, Motul, and maybe even Mobil1.

Pretty sure that Mobil 1 is what nearly everyone uses.

My car has a Mobil 1 sticker on it and Mobil 1 0/40 in it. The 55 makes 10K miles with out adding any extra oil. I don't think RP offers an engine warranty like Mobil dose.

yeah i use mobile 1 european formula with no problems. There a couple of huge theads on the w203 forums why you should use factory approved oil.

Glyn made a pretty good post about mercedes approved oils.

Why waste the money on another "strange motor oil" that costs 2x-3x as much, provides no noticeable performance gain (over Mobile1), and provides no noticeable increase in engine life (over the suggested Mobile1)? Lets just assume for a minute that it does provide a little longer engine life- do you really see yourself keeping the car to the end of the life of the parts that have to do with the engine oil? I've had my Focus for 150k+ miles- it's been flogged to say the least. It's had more bottles of nitrous ran through it than I care to count and Crower cams since about the 6k mile mark. It's never had nothing more than conventional oil from day one- it's still purring just fine.

Just to be clear, there's Mobil 1 and then there's Mobil 1. If you want to be absolutely certain that you're doing the right thing, then use the European Formula Mobil 1 (0W40). That said, I agree with bumpnzx3 that the difference in engine life may never be noticed in our lifetimes. One exception is with high-strung turbos where a weaker oil can burn and coke up the oil passages in the turbo.

LET C32 2002
I tried RP on last oil change and honestly I don't like it..I haven't had a add quart issue but then again I haven't checked either but I am going back to mobil1 for 2 reason.

1. $3-$4 cheaper per quart.
2. It felt no better then Mobil1.

I tried RP to see if everything works smoother and it feels the same as Mobil1...imo.

I used Mobil 1 on my C5 with a procharger, cams and some other mods as well as when I had the C55 with nos and all the other mods and not a single problem. I would just stick to factory specs.

Even using Euro Mobil 1 I still find myself having to add an extra quart over 10k miles or so. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

I use only Mobil 1 in my AMG's not cause I thought it was better but just cause that was what MB recommended. Used in in my Porsche as well all with good results and ran both the Porsche and the C36 to over 100k mi with zero oil consumption ever.

That said, I have ran three high performance motorcycles on either Royal Purple or Redline both with very good results. The Royal Purple lubed bikes did use tiny amounts of oil over time but they spend most of their time at 15,000 rpm and are set up a good bit looser than a car engine. I think the RP blend that I used was thinner to reduce parasitic losses from the oil and this contributes to some loss past the rings and valve guides. It is a trade off but not one to lose sleep over.

Something tells me that if I used RP in my old Porsche 944, it would be in a puddle in the driveway within a few hours. I have the "rolling-oil-change" feature (common to 20+ year old German cars) where you drip a quart on the driveway every 45 days and put a fresh quart in the top.

PS: My last C32 oil change I used Castrol Syntec 5W40. Nothing blowed up so far, although my hood latch handle just snapped off. Hmmmm. Syntec bad for hood latch handles.

For those who quote others in their sig. line, this one's certainly "sig. worthy" - good one, Fifth.

If they did, the outcome would have been different.

Interesting feature.....did that come with the car or was it an added-on option available after 20 yrs? lol

I used Royal purple in my last car and couldn't really feel a thing....well, sorta. But it wasn't worth the extra cost. Having to add more oil isn't from using Royal Purple. a lot of benz owners have had to add oil using mobile one as well.

It's a slowly evolving option. The rate of oil exchange increases each year.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Rp

in some weights is now 229.5 spec. But with mobil 1 0w40 euro syn working perfectly for 123,000 miles I will keep it running on M1 and the other benz's on M1.Why gamble?Just don't use 30 wt in the fine AMG engine.
Walmart carries euro spec 0w40 and napa has a buck off coupon sale for M1 almost every other month

Merry Christmas

RP and Mobil 1 are the same price at pepboys or any other major retailer, I don't know where everyone is seeing higher prices, go to any pepboys or autozone its the same price.

Also you shouldn't run 0w weights in our cars period mobil1 or RP (even though you can technically as per the manual for very cold conditions). Mobil1 0w weights pour like water and are way too thin IMHO. 10w-30 or 10w-40 (or heavier) is a much better suited weight for these german motors and will prevent oil consumption so before blaming a specific brand, make sure its not the oil weight you are using thats the problem.

With that said, I've never had good results with Mobil 1 and nothing but positive results with RP but again its up to the end user. I suggest running a thicker weight first and seeing if that cures the problem before switching oils.

Mobil 1 0/40 in mine currently, just added a quart yesterday, well before the 10k mark. driver side cam cover was leaking a bit, but not enough to account for an entire quart. im personally not too thrilled with not having a dipstick, and wonder how accurate the "oil check" feature really is.
