Question Computer read out tells me this: Lower Oil Level...

this malfunction pops out when i drive the benz for a while...and i just ignore it, becasue after a while the car has been sitting for a while and start it back up, the malfunction doesnt appear...should i ignore it, or should i really lower the engine oil level? help out please!

P.S. just went out and checked oil level outside, and the car has been sitting out for almost 4 hours now, it says that oil level is ok...so i dunno?

How are you checking the oil level? Dipstick? Dyno mode? You may also have a bad oil level sensor.

These cars are known to drink 1/2 to a full qrt of oil between oil changes.
How many miles to your next service?

If ur handy do the oil change yourself (i'm assuming since you have a Fairlady Z?)..... be sure to remove the skid plate housing and there are two plugs that drain the oil. Do a search for oil change DIY and you'll come across it.

Afterwards reset the computer (another search)

You do NOT want to be driving the car around with too much oil in the motor. Do NOT ignore it.
If a warning light is appearing telling you to lower your oil level, then you should assume that the computer is correct (until such point that you know otherwise).

The appropriate way to measure the oil level is to have oil up to normal operating temperature and then to measure it on a flat surface no less than 5 minutes after turning the motor off. [Page 141 of the user manual]
This is because:
  • You need to let the oil return to the oil pan.
  • You need to allow proper thermal expansion of the oil in order to get an accurate level.

4 hours is far too long to wait to obtain an accurate oil level reading after turning off the engine.

If 9,600 miles are remaining according to the FSS, then it is probable that somebody changed the oil a relatively short time ago. Did a dealership change the oil? Even it it was the dealership, it is entirely possible that somebody put a little too much oil into the motor.
