Is this too much to be paying to repair this C32?

I brought my 02 c32 to an independant shop who specialize in benz and bmws. I want to get everything fixed and taken care of before adding the pulley kit, tune, h/e, intake to the car. heres what needs to be fixed:

Valve cover gasket leaking

Crankcase Ventilation Cap Gasket

Rear diff leaking

Engine belt

2 new pulleys and tensioners

coolant flush

they told me it would cost $3,000 to fix everything. so i told them i will get back to them this week. im sure mercedes would charge alot more, but damn, 3 grand? let me know what you guys think?

maybe its the rear diff thats eating up all the cost?

I know most shops charge about $90 a side for the valve cover gaskets,

Probably $100 for the belt and pulleys in labor plus parts of pulleys but you can buy the oem replica pulleys are like $30-40 per pulley.

A new belt is like $60, but if you get the pulley saver kit, it comes with a serpentine belt as well as the idler pulleys. I suggest you get that if your going to get crank pulley kit.

Maybe another $100 for the coolant flush?

The other stuff listed doesnt seem like it would cost past $1k in cost.

$3000 is way too much for a shop to be charging for those repairs (and I used to be a service writer!). Where are you located? I would do that work for you for under $500 parts and labor.

The most expensive part is the tensioner, which is about $299. Which pulley(s) are they referring to? Is it possible they want to replace the SC pulley?? That part right there is $1500 by itself from the dealer.

I was quoted by an MB dealer $753 for labor and no parts to replace the pinion seal on my rear differential. So I know the majority of the cost can not be going to that job. I would be weary of that shop and take my business else where.

I plan on doing a DIY in the next coming weeks for replacing the seals on the rear differential.

You should be capable of doing all the other jobs, the only one I am not familiar with is the crankcase ventilation cap gasket.

Less than $500 is full retail parts, and less than a day's labor for $2500. Round numbers are always a turnoff. It's like they look at you and say, "Yeah, this customer has $3K."

It's just conjecture, but it sounds like your Indy pulled a number out of the sky and checked to see if you'd bite.

no because the belt it comes with is too big if you have the stock crank. But its a good investment if your going to get the crank pulley.

Boohooblers has a diy on the idler pulleys with a link to a website where you can buy the idler pullies for cheap. Its probably a 15-20min install.

I did my Code 3 SC pulley and belt wrap as a DIY!! Took less than an hour. A lil patience and the right tools goes a long way. I even got a pack of M & Ms from Brandon for the SC Pulley back in the day!! I guess that was to keep me occupied while I did the install.

Yes, $3000, better beleive that. But i went to pick up the car yesterday, i told them i dont have 3 grand to have those things fixed and the mercedes mechanic told me that my car actually runs pretty good and that he would personally just replace the plugs, the 2 pulleys (didnt tell me which ones, but i did tell him that the s/c whine was ALOT louder and apparently, its because 2 pulleys shold be replaced) and the tensioner because the belt wobbles "very little", and the belt obviously. i told him about the valve cover gasket leak and diff leak but even the dealership told me not to worry about those. the diff is full of fluid, just slowly builds up around housing, not dripping. and valve cover is leaking a bit in the back, again not dripping. crankcase vent cap is the cap thats on the valve cover. when you take the center engine cover off, on the right, there will be a cap and its building up around the edges but he says ALL cars leak there because of the pressure build up. And car needs coolant flush and 4 new tires.

Anyways, im pretty sure its the idler pulley and water pump pulley. i hear that when the whine gets loud, its usually the idler pulley. How would i check to see which one it is? if it is the idler pulley, i wont even change it, since temjinx has been telling me to get the pulley saver kit and trhat eliminates the idler pulley. I also plan on changining the valve cover gaskets myself, ive seen a diy guide but didnt look too much into it. looks pretty easy. i will buy the 1 step colder plugs and the wires, a new belt tensioner, belt, depending on which pulley, i will get a replacement one, and ive decided on the 181mm pulley kit with pulley saver, and i will also get a new supercharger bearing while im already at it. the pulley kit seems pretty easy as well to instal, i hope so.

gonna leave the diff for now, dont think its damaging the car at all anyway.

Lenin, im located in monmouth NJ, about 5 minutes from Englishtown Raceway park.

I will DEFINITELY be getting this with the 181mm pulley kit. It basically replaces the idler pulley and re routes the belt. and since the idler pulley is spinning faster with the upgraded pulley kit, the idler pulley will not last very long, so this kit is the soluttion to that problem. great review and seems like a pretty simple install.
