MAF help...check engine light on.
My C55 started having a little stumble to it yesterday and the check engine light came on. I took it to AutoZone and it read MAF sensor. Anybody have thoughts on this? Pics?

Used Pacho’s technique to R&R the MAF on a friend’s CLK55. Worked perfectly.

Thanks for that link...so I took the intake set-up off and cleaned the K&N's and used MAF cleaner on the MAF. The car, after several miles of driving seems to be running better and doesn't have the crazy unstable idle but still has a weird hesitation. I took the car back to AutoZone and had the check engine light turned off but after getting it home and turning the car off and the cranking it again its back on. Is this a symptom of a MAF going bad? Any thoughts on if there is an upgrade MAF to replace this one with if I indeed need to replace it?

Another update...after driving the car 30 miles the mpg is much better than usual on the same trip (I'm assuming because the MAF is screwed and the car is running lean). The car is again having the idle issue when stopped at a redlight but is running great when up to speed. MAF is around $285 at NAPA, which includes a $36 core charge. Thoughts?

An inexpensive OBD-II scanner/data logger (e.g., Equus 3160 Innova) will promptly pay for itself when chasing gremlins on these cars.
There’s scant rationale for pitching sound hardware during exploratory surgery.
Nevertheless, sounds as if your MAF may have already exceeded its useful service life. Good luck with it.
Some diagnostics if you haven’t already replaced it:

So I've got a MAF on order and plan to put it on myself...should I disconnect the battery for a set amount of time to reset the computer? Will this also reset the check engine light?

Do Not
buy a Napa Maf use only oem. Call www.autohausaz.com or www.peachparts.com
You will regret otherwise.
Do not unhook the battery that will clear the code but not erase the stored codes in the ecu. Better to just install new unit and let it adapt the the ecu to the new range. Then the light will go out by itself.
You will regret otherwise.

I would agree with this 1,000% You definitely want to stick to OEM on these, and looking at the price you got quoted at NAPA you will probably end up cheaper going through the sources that "ohlord" posted.

I worked for NAPA for a number of years through college and then some after and I'm a believer that many of the aftermarket parts meet or exceed OEM standards. In this case they claim it test 85% more "points" than OE. The part was $189 comparred to $350 at my local Mercedes dealer. It has a 12 month warranty so I think I'm good.
I installed the part last night...problem seems to be fixed! I'll update after a few days of driving!

Check Engine Light did indeed turn itself off! I put the new MAF on the car and drove it about 3 miles on a test drive and the car was running much better, problem solved. The next day I backed it out of the garage to wash it and then put it back in...it was at this point that I noticed that the CEL had already cut itself off.
If I have any issues with the NAPA reman MAF in the future I'll revive the thread and let the commuinity know...so far so good though!
