When I go to Kelley Blue Book they show private sale value for your car, in good condition, around $11,500. Edmunds, which I think is more realistic, shows it around $11,000.
You can sell the car privately with an outstanding loan, as long as you can find a buyer that is willing to write one check to the finance company, and another to you, and is willing to drive off without the title in hand. It certainly complicates things, but is not impossible. If there is any way you could manage to pay off the loan after you find a buyer, but just before completing the sale, it would make things easier.

This assumes, of course, that you are "above water", that is you make enough from the sale of the car to pay off the new loan. It doesn't sound like your buddy was in that position.

ohlord is right to a point - but if you had planned on keeping your lien'd MB then it may not be a big mistake after all. And as long as you're enjoying and cherishing it, then you shouldn't suffer "buyer's remorse". Gas prices are out of our control. Sometimes we just have to bear with it... can you get a cheap econobox beater for your commute, and reserve that oh-so-nice C43 for weekend and leisure purposes? The C43 is somewhat rare but still a very desirable AMG with a worldwide following... Unfortunately, 99% of all the cars out there depreciate, period. If you still plan on selling it, I hope you can recoup as much as possible.

I ended up ditching my 08' focus because I couldn't get it together mentally to sell my C43. The focus was great, just very replaceable unlike my 202. I have a local guy who is still interested in my car and came by the weekend of the 4th with $13,500. I just felt sick and couldn't do it If you left your charger on the car it would probably bring a little more interest. To me the S/C would make a huge difference if I was to buy a C43.
What kind of S/C system did you have??
