Base line dyno run for C43

I have finally located a shop that I can do a base line dyno run at. I am in the middle of scheduling it as we speak and should be able to do it sometime this week.

I am intersted to see what numbers I am putting down as I am completely stock sans secondary cats and resonator.

Here is a list of the following mods I have coming up which will be installed in the following order:

1.) Evosport UD pulley kit
2.) Evosport phenolic spacers
3.) New exhaust (kleemann headers, x pipe, 300 cell metal cats)
4.) Eurocharged tune

I am planning on getting a dyno after each mod is installed to track the gains (if any).

I fully understand that some of the mods listed above will not net actual crank HP gains but should reduce drivetrain loss which in turn should net some RWHP gains. Either way there is a ton of speculation and claims out there and I have decided I am going to go ahead and be the guinea pig.

I have a 6 month plan to have all of this finished and dyno'd but knowing me I might get a little impatient and cut that time in half.

I will keep everyone posted

Dyno is scheduled for Friday @ 4:30pm

The shop I am going to has a Dynojet 424xLC2 AWD chassis dyno. It can measure up to 2000whp and you can achieve 200mph. The cost for a baseline is based on the configuration of the car 2wd or 4wd and can range from 80.00 to 100.00 for 3 pulls with AFR readings.

One question I have is will I need to do anything to be able to dyno (i.e. pull ESP fuse, dyno mode??, etc...).

You can expect me to post my dyno results by Saturday at the latest

I think it will be necessary to pull the ESP fuse in order to disconnect totally the ESP control. Otherwise, nothing else as far as I know.

eclectic assortment of cars
I understand Dynojets typically read a bit 'high', but if you keep going back to the same dyno, the consistency will allow you to measure the relative changes. Just use the dyno as a tuning tool in that regard, as opposed to a 'bragging rights' measurement.

I believe it is best is if you can keep it in 4th gear, or whichever has the closest to 1:1 ratio.

I would head to an exhaust shop before the dyno session, and have an O2 sensor bung welded on to one of the pipes, just after the cat. Make sure they include the plug too, so you can plug it up afterwards (with plenty of anti-seize compound of course). The extra bung will be for the wideband O2 sensor. I wouldn't rely on a wideband O2 that's stuck into the exhaust tips out back.

Thumbs up for your plan, the only way to sort out tangible gains will be with before and after dynos. But as you can see, the cost will add up quickly! The local shop with a Mustang brand dyno charges $125 for three pulls.

Yeah I am using the dyno strictly to compare before and after numbers. I'm sure I am going to spend a couple hundred dollars on dyno runs alone but it is worth it to me to determine what mods give gains (if any).

I believe 4th gear is 1:1 but then I am thinking I will be around 130 MPH or so when I hit 6500 RPM in 4th gear

The shop says the dyno is good up to 200 MPH so maybe it won't be an issue.

I wish I would of dyno'd before and after the cat and resonator delete but I wasn't thinking

Oh well at least I will be able to prove (or disprove as the case may be) some of these HP/TQ claims. Should be very helpful to anyone planning on modding their C43 in the future

Does anyone know for sure if the ESP fuse will need to be pulled to dyno

Just scheduled an oil change and rear diff fluid change and will be picking the car up a few hours before my dyno run

This should bring me up to date on ALL fluids and services as I just had the B service and tranny flush a couple months ago

So, all systems are go for take-off. Hope all goes well. Get the car nice and warm (water and oils) and don't forget to keep cool air blowing in the front

The shop is over 20 miles away from me and the majority of the distance can be driven on the highway so I will definitely be "warmed" up.

This shop regularly tunes lambos, vipers, etc... so I am sure they will have all necessary items to complete the dyno run

Here is a link to their website:

BAD NEWS AND GOOD NEWS AND REALLY GOOD NEWS:

First the bad news:
I was unable to get my car on the dyno When I got there they had a 1992 supra on the dyno they were custom tuning and it took a lot longer than they had expected. When I got there the supra was putting down 630 RWHP and by the time I left they had it up to 680+ RWHP

Now the good news:
When I got there I was greeted by some guy who looked familiar to me. I told him I was there for a dyno and he directed me to an office where I started talking with one of the techs. The tech directs me over to a viewing window where you can see the car on the dyno and is flanked by HUGE flat screen tv's that are displaying the dyno info and tells me I am next. After about 30 minutes or so the tech comes up to me and tells me its going to be at least another 30 minutes before I can get on the dyno at which point he tells me if I want to reschedule for next Friday I can run on the dyno for FREE, I tell him that's fine with me. We sit down and schedule the time in his computer and I get up to leave. As I am about to leave the first guy who greeted me when I got there asks if I would be interested in a tour and I immediately tell him I would be VERY interested. He takes me behind the scenes on a tour of this complex, yes I said COMPLEX. Behind the scenes I am greeted by exotics, old school muscle, imports, and kit cars OH MY!! Here is a list of vehicles they had:

1.) Murcielago with Heffner twin turbo 800+ RWHP
2.) 1997 WIDEBODY twin turbo Supra (had the SICKEST HRE wheels I have ever seen)
3.) 1994 twin turbo Supra
4.) Viper SRT-10
5.) 2012 GTR
6.) 2011 GTR
7.) 1967 SS Camaro
8.) AC Cobra kit car
9.) 1957 Bel Air (EVERYTHING CUSTOM!!!)
10.) 1999 TURBO R34 SKYLINE (450 RWHP on pump gas / 675 RWHP on 114 octane race fuel)
11.) NSX
12.) 1967 Chevelle with BUILT Viper engine swap 800+ HP
13.) G37 with Stillen turbo kit and Vossen wheels (cleanest Infinity I have ever seen)
14.) 350Z with LS1 SWAP (they fired it up for me and it was just UNREAL)

there were other cars as well but these were by far the most impressive. I am completely blown away with the quality of work that was going on here.

So now for the REALLY good news:
The guy who was showing me around (looked like he was a tech there or something) tells me that he knows me. I tell him he looks familiar and we start talking about people we used to hang out with and determine that we ran in the same circles when we were younger. He tells me he is the co-owner of the shop and is extremely sorry I was unable to get on the dyno and offers me SEVERAL free dyno's LUCKY ME!!!!

My dyno is scheduled for next Friday @ 4pm

Here are a couple pics I snapped, I should have got more but I was to enthralled with the numerous GEMS

A customers GTR

Here a couple more pics:

Here you can see half of a Viper in the fore ground and the Chevelle in the back ground. The Viper was the motor donor for the swap but what you can't see is they converted the rest of the viper into a video game. They had a 3D tv mounted in front of the viper and the steering wheel and pedals linked into a PS3 so you could play 3D racing games. The sound came through the car speakers

This was a Honda Ruckus they had modified to look like a chopper

This place is the $H1T and now that I just happen to know the owner and get free dyno's you can expect to see more pics in the future. They are having a dyno day on July 30th and I will definitely be attending.

Since the dynos are free, you can make one pass with just the ESP off, and then another with the fuse out. Then you can assuredly state whether it makes any difference. And then with/without the AC on. Northstar engines used to produce more HP with the AC engaged. They also used to fail smog with the AC on.

Good thinking Marcus Crazy to think that with the A/C engaged you would make more HP

Manufacturer Tricks

The early Northstars had different ECU logic when the AC was on. I think it was timing in particular. GM had a recall because although they passed smog easily with the AC off, the EPA frowned upon the "better drivability logic" that was triggerred by the AC being on.

Another oddity - Some 5.0 Fords couldn't get full timing advance until the coolant was up to operating temperature. Those with oversized radiators and cooler thermostats did some head scratching at the lower dyno numbers.

There was a time when Porsche ECUs did some bizzare hardware check to determine if the hardware had been modified. Fail the check and power was reduced.

Lastly, it's well known that many US Kawasaki sport bikes performed differently than their European/Japanese counterparts. Somebody figured out that a single jumper wire triggered different ECU logic (leaving an exhaust valve open). The results of that single jumper?

1st run. Stock 2005 ZX-6RR ran at 2:38:16 PM 92.5 HP
2nd run. ECU wires jumpered ran at 2:39:36 PM 101.7 HP

There must be a zillion back doors out there. The trick is finding the key!

My baseline dyno run is scheduled for Friday @ 4pm, I will post results Friday night.

After the baseline dyno I have the following planned:

"Stage 1" = Evosport under drive pulley kit (Already in the works as I have just ordered the kit online)

"Stage 2" = Evosport phenolic spacers (I will be ordering these in a couple weeks)

"Stage 3" = Kleemann headers (swain coated), X pipe, 300 cell metal cats

"Stage 4" = Eurocharged ECU tune

Here is the timeline I have planned:

"Stage 1" = installed and dyno'd by the end of July

"Stage 2" = installed and dyno'd by the end of August

"Stage 3" = installed and dyno'd by the end of November

"Stage 4" = installed and dyno'd by the end of December (going to ask the wifey for Stage 4 for Christmas )

I believe this will be the end of the modding of my C43 as far as the engine is concerned . After I have everything installed the next step would be F/I but really I am not interested in that currently, maybe after I pick up a W210 E55 and get bored with that (IF I get bored with that ) I might think about dropping a S/C on my C43.

It will be interesting to see how these mods stack up on the dyno...
