C43 project

Back in the C43 202 game. Purchased this 1999 C43 while I was visiting Disneyland with the family. I had the car transported to the Bay Area. Car had a blown motor, so I sourced a 5.4 from a 02 E55. Changed all the seals, waterpump, thermostat, etc. also purchased the Speed43 airbox which I’ve used on my last C43 along with black series engine mounts to handle the 5.4.

Suspension is on some coil overs that has the adjustment caps removed so the car is slammed. I will be installing H&R with Bilstein sport shocks. For wheels I’ve always liked the look of the SL55 22 spoke wheels. I will be having them refinished and wrapped in Yokohama Advan Sport A/S tires.

I’ve got the motor done on the engine stand and plan to swap it out this next weekend.

I’m also debating on painting the whole car obsidian black. But for now I’m just taking it one step at a time and need to get her running and height fixed.

Will keep posting as it progresses.

What had failed on the original C43 motor? Where are you at in the Bay? I'm near downtown San Jose.

Looks to be a great project. Good work keeping another C43 on the road

I'm shocked the M113 was blown; do you know the cause? Great project!

That’s a great question on how the motor blew because it blew a rod on the drivers side. I’ve never seen catastrophic damage like that to the m113.

The previous owner had the car for about a decade or so. He said he was driving home and then out of no where it occurred.

For me, I was going to swap anyways so it wasn’t a factor, but interesting.

@DRBC43AMG thank you. These car were rare to begin with. I’ve always loved the simplicity of these cars compared to newer Benz’s.

@PJmak thats sweet that there is love being poured into these cars. I’m sure on airbags should ride smoother.

it would be good to have a get together. Too bad AMG didn’t do any other Private Lounge events at Laguna Seca.

I had met you there the last time @PJmak. You recorded the sound clip of my white C43 with the 204 C63 exhaust and I believe it’s on your YouTube page.

I will definitely continue to take pictures along the way and keep you all posted.

Happy New Years!

I am looking for a fan shroud for the car. The one on there is broken. The dealer discontinued this part. Our cars are getting older and harder to get new parts.

if anyone has one or knows anyone that has one that is not broken, please let me know.

Also, the w208 CLK430 and CLK55. Share the same fan shroud. After all it is on the same frame lol.

@edhu with everything so expensive due to inflation, I know it’s going to be up there around 5-6k plus. I have to shop around, I will keep you posted.

My cousin bought the car, then it landed back with my brother. So it’s still in the family.

Running with too low oil in the sump, overheated, oil starvation and then threw a rod to get some cool air

@DRBC43AMG lol you’re probably right. It was like I’ve had enough. Time for a new heart transplant 😂.

I was amazed how big of a difference the 5.4 makes from a torque standpoint. AMG should’ve released these as a 55 to begin with.

Agree 100% and not forgetting an exhaust like the secondary cats and resonator delete which most owners do in order to get a real AMG sound

@DRBC43AMG I wish I could’ve removed the secondary cats. But Cali smog is tough without. It has some aftermarket exhaust on there. I’ve yet to see the car on the lift.

hopefully Wednesday I’ll have it up in the air. I’ll snap some pics.

A friend had some paint work done at East Bay Collision in Fremont that looked good and was priced reasonably. I had them look at some stuff for me that I haven't pulled the trigger on yet. There were some nice cars in the shop when I visited including an AMG GTS and some Porsches, which gave me a bit of confidence. That being said, I have limited exposure and would definitely do your research before pulling the trigger.

I haven’t really looked yet since my first goal
was to get the car running and driveable.

I bet the cost would be lower if all the lights and trim were removed beforehand.

Here are my wheels pre-refinish

OEM SL55 22 spoke

18x8.5 30 offset front
18x9.5 33 offset rear

+1 on the astounding difference it makes to swap to a 5.4. On paper it doesn't seem like much of a difference. But in real life, it's a radically different car with the 5.4. This is hard to overstate.

And now that folks have figured out a proper OEM manual swap (but with an aftermarket clutch to withstand the torque) I wish someone would compare it to the E39 M5. Fingers crossed, I bet a 5.4 swapped manual C43 is faster, better.

I still have my 99 with an absurd amount of miles and faded paint and I would rather take a bullet than part with it. I have 3 nicer, newer cars and the C43 remains my favorite.

Manual swap 5.4 C43 would be a fun car. Would
be a good race against the e39 M5.

I live in Switzerland which had and still has some of the most stringent emission rules around. My secondary cats and resonator delete replaced with a 'Y' pipe never caused a problem with emission controls. They are mandatory to pass every two years in an official governement test center. Naturally someone in the know will realize in a visual inspection that the exhaust is not OE but as these vehicles become older, the younger test technicians don't know the difference. They will check the part # on the muffler, so that has to stay OE. No problem though as it makes a very nice sound with the set-up and has no annoying drone either.
