Hardwired Escort 9500i Radar Detector :: Photos
Instead of tapping into a power source, I used an aftermarket Cigarette Lighter Plug w/ Straight (Flat) Power Cord run above the headliner, down the passenger side A-pillar and into the glove box's switched 12V outlet.
The LED color matches perfectly with the mirror, the detector has a clear/level view of the road ahead and it is barely visible from the outside.

NRGY - I think there are a few buttons on the rearview that allow you to select the compass.

What didn't you like about the 9500i when you personally tried it?
BTW, the link/review you posted is from 2002.

I'm addressing the laser issue in the Spring when I install the Blinder M47 jammers.
The area between the headliner and windshield has plenty of space to hide the wire. I pulled the A-pillar out just far enough to get the flat wire to lay behind the cover up top and then I ran the wire behind the fabric covered rubber strip that runs the length of the front of the A-pillar frame.
Hope that helps.

. It is 2010 now and the V1 is obsolete.

No need to attach it. It fits/rests above the headliner.
