Should I get the tire & rim protection package from MB?

Hi everyone,

I'm picking up my 2010 beast next Tuesday and wonder if I should buy the rims and tires protection?

The salesperson strongly recommended the rim & tire protection for $900 because apparently it's very expensive ($6000 for four tires+rims) to replace if you damage the tires. He said he won't recommend normal Benz buyer about this protection but it's strongly recommended for AMG buyers.

Should I purchase this protection?

Thanks!!

From what I read, the protection is a bit sketchy, and they will fight to pay. But I probably don't know what I am talking about.

I guess if you are leasing, then you need to return with original wheels. But if not, and they get damaged, just buy an aftermarket set for alot cheaper than $6000. And I really am not so crazy about the stock wheels anyway.

Well the tire part may not be worth it (not that you can separate it) becasue you willl be replacing the rear tieres before you make 12-payments, may are gone at 7,700 miles 11 payments.

In a word no.. The finance guys at all MB dealerships, BMW, Lexus and Infiniti, try to push this crap.. tires will go quick.forget any coverage on them. and if you are careful you don't need wheel protection.. believe it, if they paid a lot of claims on this coverage it would no longer be sold.. its another huge profit center for a dealership. It goes along with paint sealant, VIN etching on glass and lojack..All BS costs you really don't need.. If you are leasing or financing they can suck you in "cause its only a few dollars a month" stretched over the term of the loan. At least they don't push undercoatiing any more

No, God forbid If something happens to your wheels and tires, You can have a good excuse to put HRE wheels on your car. At least that's what i would do.

The coverage is valid on any wheel/tire combo you have on the car, not just the OEM wheels/tires.

If the protection plan is the first class plus plan from mb financial then it is not great but it is not bad. The dealer threw it in as a gift when I bought my car, so I didn't pay for it per say. I have used it once and brought my repair to my dealer because they would give me a loaner. It was a cosmetic repair and it cost like $150. Well the cosmetic repairs are capped at $125 under this plan and the SA covered the extra $25 because he didn't call me about it before performing the work. The stock wheels are 2 tone and therefore a little more complicated to fix, so I'm told. I called mb financial and they said $125 is the national average for wheel repair. So keep that in mind. But if you had to replace a wheel, it most definitley would be worth it. I had no issues with payment because it is a mb financial plan. They just sent a check to the dealer.

Thanks everyone. Does it make a difference if I was leasing it instead of buying it?

I think the Rim/Tire insurance is well worth it. My friend had bent three of his rims on his c63 and Mercedes replaced all three of the rims no questions asked.

It is, when you return the car at the end of the lease, all bended and damaged orginal rims have to be replaced and charged on your account and those wheels are expensive ($1,000.00@). I have the tire and rims insurance, tires, have been replaced two times due to the RF tires have a limitation to repair. I will go for the insurance if you are leasing it.

It is a simple fact that 1 rim or 2 tires will pay for the insurance. So if you drive on glass smooth roads all the time, with no construction or other debris around - its probably not worth it. On the other hand....

I bought it but have not had to use it. The insurance was a lot less than $900 (you're probably being raped here) on mine. On my 911, it paid for itself in the first 6 months with a side-puncture on a $475 PS2 rear. Even better, my Porsche dealer replaces both sides (even when only one is damaged) if there is significant wear on the tires so you don't have mis-matched tread depths.

My dealer offered me $1195 for 5 year coverage. On a 3 year lease.

Toronto and Vancouver MB Canada Retail Stores will sell you tire and rim at any time, as long as your current wheels/tires are sound and meet the minimum tread depth requirement. You can buy it through the service department.
