My run in with a Camaro SS

Not sure of the year, new body style.

Doing some Saturday errands I see this mean face in my rear view. The SS has this grimace from the front. It looks like an angry face.

Pull up to a light, way to much traffic, he lets me hear what hes got off the line. Quick first gear pull. Stupid loud. Now im interered. I put the window down a bit at the next light. Headers.. Cam... who knows what else. Those two things were very distinct though.

Now I wanna run him... I do a fly by on him... drop it in N and give a good 5K rev as I pass. He pulls past me.. does the same while going through a tunnel. We happen to be right next to the autobahn as we call it. I pull behind him, he puts on the signal to get on the parkway.. Its on!!


No traffic.. he gets on the parkway.. I'm close behind.. enters up to 60.. he hammers it most likely expecting to see me disappear in his rear view. I hammer it as well. He makes room.. I do a fly by but hes close! VERY. I pull about 1 car and we continue to about 150. I creep away but hes about 1 car behind and not making up any distance. Race over.

I slow down to about 40.. 3 honk it... Boom... He pulls big time. 1/2 a car on me. His ridiculously loud exhaust deafening me as I sit about 1/2 car behind holding my ground though. He cuts off at 100.

Next run... same result... cuts off at 100.

Next run.. same result... he pulls about 1/2 car.. cuts off at 100.

Final run were at about 20 MHP. 3 honk.. perfect start for both. I take him out of the hole by 1/2 car. He pulls a little then needs to shift losing a little ground. Im still ahead with my long *** gears. He shifts twice for my every 1 it seemed. Must have been geared for the 1/4. Finally shifting into 4th gear he gets slightly ahead.. cuts off at 100.

On the way back pacing each other at about 90 I hammer it on a straight. Pass him quite fast and I hear him get on it to catch me. No hope at that point. I pull till about 150 and cut off. Hes way back there. Guess he does like the high speeds...

Turn off, open the window... He pulls next to me and says "Damn bro, that car is fast!" I return with "Yours too!!" and follow with "Im tune only" his eyes widen. I say "You got a lot done. I can hear the cam and the exhaust work" he nods. We both pull away with a thumbs up.

Nice run! Damn only to 100? Too damn short. At least wind out our 4th gear to 130 where we shine. Especially me!

Yeah, it was fun. He had me on the bottom. About the same as you get on me. The problem is he wouldnt run past 100. I think he knew I would take him beyond that. The first run he did to 150 and he lost. He was cool, but cooler would have been running me up top to be fair. He cut off at the point where he "won"

Super Charge that SS with the same mods and he would have smoked me. They are mean modded. Buy one for 35K and dump 10K into it and eat C63's. Not bad!

You need to be very careful.. Check your insurance policies you might not be covered if your out of the US, in Mexico??

At MIR?

Jeezzz you guys are hardcore.. Dec 22nd on a Wednesday... I gotta get into your line of work to make that happen.

I'm very impressed by the Chevy Camaro SS...even stock (as claimed by the owner), one guy was running ~12.5 sec. @ 109mph (if I recall correctly) at the track when I went a few weeks ago. Not bad, imho. Now, it's not my kind of car, but fairly fast nonetheless.

Nice runs Propain, great description. The Camaro SS is a badass car, especially the one you described. They really do sound insane.

My step dad ran his bone stock SS vs a stock cls550 and he couldn't pull past him at all. Its was dead even every race. This guys had some good stuff done to pass you the few times he did. Makes me very happy you still ran him down in the top end!

I don't think so !! i have both and GT500 by far is faster in straight line.

I owned a 2010 SS, Kenne Bell 2.8L twin screw with Corsa exhaust, and for two weeks I had ARH LT's.

My feelings about both cars is that u definitely need a blower, a nice blower cam with LT's to domintae a tuned C63.

Just a blower and exhaust and the race is very even, with the edge to the tuned C63.

5th gen camaros need a nice torque converter to start getting fast. You can pick up up to 4 tenths with a nicely complimented converter and the rest of the car stock.

If you look at the 1/4 mile fast lists for 5th gens, you'll be surprised at how much money and track dedication AND over 500 rwhp for the SS (auto or manual) to be solid mid to high 11 sec cars.

Its because of the weight of the car, and the sloppy slush box. The engines are brutal. Almost as impressive as the M156, but not really.

And yes, SS's with blowers, cams and LT's are deafening. Not even funny.

Cam alone with LT's won't beat a tuned C63 most of the time. The SS would also need head work, CAI, and LT's. Catbacks don't do much until you get above 500+ rwhp, that's over 600 bhp.

Your SS was likely blown for it to do what it did. Probably a Maggy if you didn't hear it, maybe even the newWhipple, both very quiet blowers.

Cool runs. Way to represent.

Edit: let me also say that I'm talking about SS's with unopened bottem ends. Once you forge the rotating assembly you can safely up the boost and by by C63. But then you have other problems like suspension (wheel hop is a problem), axles, half shafts, torque converters, trans and engine cooling.

Also, with SS's you can really guage their potential by their rwhp levels and because there are so many Camaros with big power mods all over the U.S. especially, we know what it takes (power wise) for the Camaro to run in the 11's and 10's. When a Camaro is less than 500 rwhp, you need to have a pretty neat little track setup and some practice to get into the 11's.
