Purpose of this seal around the grill?

I always noticed this seal around the grill to be a bit loose and now yesterday after the carwash it peeled off on one side. I decided to remove it completely, it's only on the upper part of the grill. Does anyone have any idea why is it there on the first place?

It's not important. It's weatherstripping just like everything else around the hood area, intended to keep water out. It will make zero difference on or off.

Without it you may get high pitched whine after 50mph

When I get my tune I'm gonna go and check, if it whines I'll take it to the dealer and ask them to put a new seal in place.

Did you keep the existing seal? I doubt it is a part you can buy separate from the grill attachment. When I swapped grills I just reattached mine with a fine line of clear silicone seal.

Haha, unfortunately no... I threw it away and I've been trying to the the glue stains off the grill. I'm sure they have it somewhere in the service booklets or where ever if they need to order it again (car is under warranty so it's up to them to get the replacement seal)

those type of seals prevent wind noise and aid in total coefficient of drag which in turn relates to gas mileage.

Does the weatheratripping keep, to a limited extent, the element off the Distronic sensor behind the star?

I'm quite sure this has nothing to do with the Distronic Plus, but I'm now also quite sure this seal prevents some wind noise, because driving around in 110-120 km/h (68-74 mp/h) I could definitely hear some noise coming from the front of the hood. I guess I'll just take my car to the dealer and ask them to put a new seal back in place. Thanks guys for the replies and suggestions!

This is perhaps another example of how MB engineers cars to eliminate problems we never even thought of. But the resulting overall complexity of an MB is intimidating. NOTHING is "simple".

Some of you people have ultra-sensitive hearing if you can hear a little wind whistle from your grill, given all the other noises the car makes.... Oh your poor delicate little ears.

True. All I hear are the Toyo tires. And of course the wind when above about 50 mph when I have the MB/Thule roof rack on the car!

It is there for a purpose the most significant I suggest is to keep rain and dirt out of the engine. Also does the hood sit on it? If you remove it will the hood flutter and chafe on the grill wearing the paint?
