Look Inside the PCV Valve

My PCV valve hose shattered when I moved it to remove the intake manifold, so why not cut it open and see what's inside?

Interesting and simple design. Tip of spring points towards pipe to engine block.

Thanks,
Ted

pretty simple...that thing is still good, i don't see any tears. just cut off the hard hose and add rubber hose to a catch can.

Catch can is in, replacement PCV was part of the plan before I give you a call for tuning

What are the symptoms of having a bad PCV on the M156?
I’m assuming some oil use and possibly some smoke on start up?
Does it affect driving performance?

blue smoke out of exhaust, low oil light being triggered often, and if it's really bad, you'll trigger a lean idle code. another thing to mention is, as its trending towards being really bad, your idle fuel trims will be far from 0, but also if you have filters, row airboxes, or headers, your fuel trims will be way off already, so it would be difficult to advise you on those items.

I replaced mine around 70k on 2014 model. Mine was still good but compared to the brand new one but the tube on the old one definitely felt brittle compared to the brand new one.

My car blows a little smoke if I do not fully warm up car before shutting down and upon restart up. The previous owner had the PCV replaced, but I did notice the car had its secondary cat removed. Car doesn't smoke every time its not warmed up, maybe once a month or so. Do you think the cat removal may play a role?

shouldn't be puffing "blue" smoke if the PCV is correctly functioning. white smoke is coolant or condensation in the exhaust system. black smoke is running rich from fuel.

if your PCV is still working correctly you may just simply need a catch can. the PCV does a great job with limiting oil vapor from pooling, but as the PCV gets worse oil pooling within the intake manifold will continue to get worse thus causing blue smoke.

I see.
Great information, I may look into a catch can as well.

If you plug that “whistle port” the whole pcv is rendered useless. It is the evacuate to atmosphere port.

i'm sure this last post was meant for another thread...but a good perfect tune would clean the pistons a good amount as well. hopefully those divots are an illusion from the carbon specks and not pitting from detonation.

arent those divots the relief for the valves? i think this is relatively common in engines.

i meant the small black specks...hard to tell if they're pitting in the alloy or shadow from the carbon bits. to me it looks like massive detonation as the leading and trailing piston crown seems to have massive pitting.

Barry, need your advice. I just replaced the PCV valve and added Weistec oil/air separator few months ago. And I keep receiving CEL light which were mixture too lean and also keep asking to add engine oil. Also I could see the oil collected from the separator after few hundreds miles and recently developing the smoke from the exhaust. (my friend told me its blue smoke). is there anything wrong with the PCV valve or the oil/air separator?

Thank you so much,
Henry

Did you hook the hoses up to the OAS backwards?

Sounds like unmetered air (vacuum leak)…

Every connection you touched… The PCV valve you replaced and the oil separator are both items that can result in a vacuum leak if not sealed up properly (or if the catch can is piped in wrong).

You can always have the system smoke-tested with a smoke machine to help find leaks.

I asked if you hooked up the hoses backwards. There's an inlet and outlet on the OAS and it's very important you have the hoses in the right orientation.

Excessive oil in your intake can cause a lean condition.

Thank you Jason. Do you mean the pipe on Weistec oil/air separator , one is in and one is out?
