I asked for one of the old secondary chain guides back so I can show everyone that it is just an annoying sound and you don't have to be worried about your timing chain, or timing components harming your engine. Here's a video of the old arm and how it rattles. The noise is caused by the plastic guide being loose against the metal arm. Also, the plastic pad that the tensioner pushes on can also rattle. The shop told me the new tensioner arm is redesigned to be one piece that includes the arm itself and where the chain rides.
I hope this puts some people's minds at ease. Your car will be fine if it has this noise. But, I am glad I was able to get mine fixed, because it sure would be hard to explain if / when I sell it.
Mate that's such good news for you and huge thank you for simply asking for the old tensioner and making that video.Originally Posted by Roysup
@Jimmy_c63s I was able to get mine fixed under aftermarket warranty. Indy shop charged ~$7100 to do the job, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it for anyone who doesn't have a warranty.I asked for one of the old secondary chain guides back so I can show everyone that it is just an annoying sound and you don't have to be worried about your timing chain, or timing components harming your engine. This post alone will now help owners forever and at least we have confirmation that it's just an annoying sound which is harmless.
A win for the C63 boys (and girls) 👍

Hi guys,
this is the first nice car i have ever owned, I've only had it for 4 months and now out of nowhere I'm getting this bad noise. what do you guys think it is? i feel like I've been done a disservice and the guy that sold it was dodgy i guess. i had it pre inspected but nothing was picked up. it could be coincidence i guess, its been 4 months.... i haven't had it serviced myself yet, as i haven't hit the kms, but was planning too very soon, then this happened. From hero to zero in 1 start up.
Its a 2017 C43. Zip file is all i could get to work, seems weird lol.

@MarkymarkC43 That is NOT good news.... sorry. I think you have a failed timing chain tensioner or broken chain guide. There could also be something wrong with the oiling system because it sounds like the noise goes away after oil pressure rises. Because the tensioners tighten from oil pressure that's why I suspect those. I would NOT drive it in that condition.
IF it is a timing chain component you are risking catastrophic engine damage if the chain jumps timing. What happens is the valves will hit the pistons and bend, and the valves may also put holes in the pistons.... basically.... new engine time if it jumps timing.

If i read “ticking noise” i think first to purge valves
and second chain guides of the timing chain (PFL).
(The chain guides are updated ( sliding rail on aluminium support to sliding rail on plastik support) I hope you understand what i mean - if not ask.
Has someone the partnumber from the purge valves ?
addendum: A2054708701

hi thanks. i have driven the car a few times after this and it drives perfect, also the mechanic testing it did too, and also when they did it the noise was not there for 6 days of testing. does that change things? my code from scan is P001177. the noise has come back at different stages tho, just not when at the mechanics.Originally Posted by Roysup

@MarkymarkC43 It sounds timing chain / variable cam phaser related to me, and because those things work off oil pressure you get that initial knocking on startup until they get sufficient oil pressure to tighten the timing chains, or fill the variable cam phasers with oil. That's why it will sound / work fine once oil is flowing. And since oil flows easier once warm you might not hear it as much when you restart the engine while it's still warm, such as when running errands during the day.
Your P001177 code is for a "intake camshaft position actuator", which kind of confirms my thoughts. That intake cam shaft is out of position and setting a code. I suspect a timing chain guide tensioner is leaking, or a variable cam timing solenoid (aka "position actuator") is clogged or bad, or something similar in the timing chain system. Either way a qualified mechanic needs to get in there.
The danger is that if it jumps timing during that time when everything is "loose" and it's rattling then the damage is done.
If you want to try a good engine oil treatment cleaner (like BG "EPR") and then do an oil change with OEM spec oil to see if it clears up a blockage, maybe you'll get lucky and it was just some sludge blocking an oil port or passage in a tensioner or solenoid or something.

yeah ur saying exactly what I'm thinking too. im taking it to Mercedes on the 5th feb, they will diagnose it much better, maybe ill ask them to do the oil clean as u mentioned then.Originally Posted by Roysup

oh damn, well i def dont want that. and that can happen just at startup? this cars gonna cost me more than i paid for it isnt it?
If your timing chain jumps only one tooth it might not crash the valves into the pistons, and it might still run, but it would have a very rough idle and low power, and you'd have a check engine light.
Again, when everything is loose and rattling like that you run the risk of it jumping several teeth on the timing gears and you will have almost instant catastrophic engine failure (faster than you can react)... By the time you hear a bigger knocking / problem the damage is done.

Have you no statutory warranty if you buy from a commercial dealer ? The C43 engine (6 cyl) is not bad - i heard nothing bad about it.
