C63S Ticking Noise

Hey guys,

I've had a ticking noise with my Mercedes for about a month now. It typically begins when I start the vehicle, and when I drive somewhere and put it in park, it's still ticking, albeit not as bad as compared to a cold start, but it can still be heard; the noise itself isn't too loud, but it's more of a nuisance. I wonder may there be an issue with the lifter in the engine combustion cycle? I heard this was an issue with the older C63's.

I'm curious to see if anyone else has had a similar issue, and if so, what you did to fix it. I'm veering away from going to the dealership for now, but if I have to, I will, I know it will be an arm and a leg, just like with any visit, so if it's an easy fix, I'm all ears!

Thank you and best regards.

Mine ticks more loudly on the right side of the engine. Which in US, is the driver's side of the engine (when standing in front of the car).

It's normal.

Same with my -17 S-model, loud tick on idle from the driver side, perfectly normal

Injector noise is common, especially with direct/cylinder injection. In the ol' days, we'd have thought "oh no, tappet noise" and would have pulled the valve cover and gotten out the feeler gauge. #;-)

I dont want to worry you however, when i first purchased my 2016 C63S used, it had 14k miles on it and the next day i had heard a slight very high pitched ticking/screech on start up. it bothered me to the point of bringing it to the dealer. after a lot of further review, of course they tried to say there was no sound, it turns out one of the timing chain guides had broken and needed to be replaced along with the chain for safety. Luckily was completed under warranty at that time and since i have not had a single issue.

Can you post a video of the sound? if it is not the same noise ill let you know right away.

Yea I think that would be more centered and louder then the "tick tick" that most have or hear.. It definitely would be MORE noticeable then just a hmmmmm

Yep that issue with the timing chain guides is a full on cricket type of noise during cold start. You'll hear it going "tek tek tek tek tek" it's very noticeable even with the hood shut and you're standing outside behind the car.

I have a few videos saved if you want i'll upload them onto youtube but it's actually a very rare issue for the M177 🙂

If its in the muffler or exhaust, I've been having to deal with that noise ever since I tuned the car. When I replaced the spark plugs it went away...but eventually came back after a couple weeks.

Sh*t mate that's a bit of a confusing one. Sound in the muffler that went away after a spark plug change? 🤔

What happened there!

I know it sounds weird. Once I tuned the car the noise started happening. Then after about 10k miles of driving, I changed the spark plugs to NGK's and the noise went away temporarily. I thought it was permanent...nope.

I've taken the car to 4 different mechanics and they all couldn't figure out the noise. Their only suggestion was to replace the performance exhaust.

The noise is bearable because you only hear it on Cold Idle. Once the car is warmed up, the sound is very faint.

The only mechanical parts in our exhausts are the flaps. Take off the actuators (the black rectangular parts) and put some copper grease on all 3 of the flaps. See if that fixes it, and if it does, it's the flaps for sure.

I've been researching the timing chain guide issue on the German forums (motor-talk) and here is a vid I've downloaded from there. It's a very rare issue and as long as your cars don't sound like this, you're good.

PS: Idle pulley and belt can give a chirping sound at times, especially after a rainy day/night but it will never sound like this.

This is the bad sound you don't want

By far the cheapest option to rule out anything else is to grease up the flaps as suggested , then see how it goes.

I have the same sound on my c63s 2016, it's not that loud like the video. It's a problem with the timing chain??

If possible, record a video and post it here so we can here the sounds. This would allow the whole group to give a consensus. Obviously without having your car in hand there is no way for sure i can say that you are having this issue.
The sound is on start up and makes a chipping/cricket sound under your hood. If it is making this sound, its could be an issue with the timing chain guides and i would suggest bringing it to a shop you trust to look at it.

After 6 minutes that noise is gone. Something to worry about?

Argh. Sorry to say this but that's the timing chain guides. Same issue @velosdesignwerks had, as mentioned above.

Is yours under warranty? If not, argue for goodwill and get it sorted asap.

I've been following a thread on the German forums about this (over here).

Yes, that's normal. Especially louder on the right side of the engine, too.

left hand drive here so left side is louder since its bouncing off that wall too but glad to hear that this one is normal. i did take it to my dealer and left it overnight but of course it decided not to make any ticking noise then

That's it. Louder ticking on the right side of the engine when standing in front of the car I meant.

Your car is all good bro she's still going strong after all these years. Apart from the old secondary cat delete fiasco you went through with the dealer 👍
