Finally got around to doing this. To copy some solutions posted on this forum

Ordered washers on ebay from taiwan 5@ 45x10?

Bought a used 30mm socket at flea market for $4 to make the spanner tool. grind/cut down edge to leave 2 prongs. not an exact fit but works

Use two screw drivers in the edge of electrical connection and it comes right off

Jack up one side of car and work on the other, with all the weight on the one front wheel the top piece will come loose easy, give it a quick jerk to break it. If it stays tight for a quarter turn its not loose. It should break easy.

Put 2 washers on each side. and some thread locker.

All done. Really not hard project at all. I tried without jacking the car up and they would not break loose

You can use the same process for the rear as well. Just pop the 2 covers in the back right next to the rear seat's headrests then use the spanner to loosen up the 2 nuts. Once they're lose, lift the rear with the jack so you can get access to the top of the 2 rear shocks/struts. Insert the metal washers to fill the gaps then re-install.

Thanks for posting this renault12ts, I replaced mine using the hard rubber from an exhaust mounting but not convinced it is up to job.

a had a bad experience with this company, they gave a price or make me an offer, delivery was way too expensive so I made offer including delivery which was more than the asking price. Never got an email to agree, e mailed him back, he banned me from buying from them! Must use Ryanair customer service trainers.

would not use again

Nick: Rear Top Hat Bushing

Nick,

Can the rear top hat bushings be replaced with the shocks installed on the car? Or does it need to be taking out to be repaired?

Confession time - I originally thought the rear bushes were different to the front, but it turns out they're just much deeper, and the bush design is much the same. I made a tool and removed my first rear bush today. I wish I had realised that three years ago!

So can the rear bushings be repaired with the shocks still installed in the car?

Yes, you can replace the top hat bushings in-situ, but it's not easy. You have keep the wheels on the ground, and be careful not to rotate the strut and strain the hydraulic pipe that comes sideways out of the top.

If you load your suspension up enough, it'll prevent the strut from rotating. I jacked up the otherside of the car whilst doing a strut, to really make sure that the strut is loaded up

Just had this same MOT failure on mine, both sides gone.
After some headscratching searching for replacements I found this thread, many thanks for all your input.
I managed to find a guy in Bolton who lists rubber in 100s of different dimensions, googled his seller id and tracked him down to a farm pinned on maps with a contact number ... he mainly deals in servicing hottubs but basically has various thicknesses of mat and a full range of cutters for his press.
Being on a tight schedule of free time before the free retest deadline I rang and asked if I could call in. Long story short I showed him what it was for and he said let me know if it works and I'll put a listing on amazon for the 10mm bushes. I'll message him tomorrow so expect to find it on there soon. Otherwise contact T & P Supplies @ Taye Farm, Bolton ... tell him you need the 10mm thick 46mm OD with an 18mm ID bushes ... we cut mine to 17mm ID and they're a bit tight getting over the lip at the top of the ram.
Second bit of useful info for you is I then had another headacratching session trying to figure how I'd get the nuts off, another long drive to Stalybridge via Chorley to pick up a mate n go to his workshop to weld up a tool, he was just reaching for the welder when he pulled an angle grinders nut removal tool off the shelf and said that doesn't look far off !! Sure enough its a perfect fit and even has the rounded end that sits perfectly round the lipped centre of the nut ... plus you can easily see if the top of the ram is moving as you start to turn it ... literally had them off and the bush packed temporarily underneath and back on in 10 mins both sides !
I managed to get a set of new gaiters recently, shipped from china via AliExpresss for about £80 + about £20 shipping, they seem ok and mine are splitting so I'll pull it apart properly and put the bushes underneath when I get a spare afternoon to do the gaiters, but it'll have taken out the up/down play at the wheel, good enough for the retest.
Hope this added info helps someone else soldiering to keep one of these great cars on the road.
Oh and if anyone can link me to any info on why my mirrors don't fold out fully, only about 80-90% and floppy until I press the button on the door panel, then they're fine ... obviously a pneumatic issue, but where exactly !? ... I've had a search but only found issues with them not working at all, its a strange one, if anyones come across the same issue I don't want to derail a thread, so maybe pm me instead, thanks.
edit : oh I've got a photo of the tool and bush read to go on...

Do you know what model of angle grinder that pin spanner is for? I'm trying to find one with those dimensions. I'm in the USA. I have the same problem on my car.

If anyone is willing to ship me tool or left over rubber let me know. In Oregon.

Here is some more information I found on WIS about the struts.
