Blind Spot

I am 4 days into ownership of my CLE 53. Lots of impressions that I am still digesting. One concern: the blind spot when backing up. The roof in the back slopes pretty hard down and the back windows are tiny. It makes it hard to see what is going on behind me, even with mirrors and a camera

my last car was a 2020 c43 sedan and I now realize how much I used the visibility from the back windows.

any one else notice this? Perhaps this common and also the experience with the old c coupes

I, too, think it is a bit squishy. Just part of the ownership experience, I guess. The camera does help and covers what needs to be covered. Use the outside mirrors as well. Our 2022 Porsche 911 had the same problem, but the rear camera was like a Polaroid camera view from 1985.

Agreed. Porsche should be ashamed of their rear view cameras. Was the worse I’ve seen to date.

Agree, on the entry level Macan, it is the worse backup camera I seen in the segment. https://mbworld.org/forums/general-m...ml#post9039663

I’m trying to get used to the small rear window of a cabriolet after driving my M350i or even the recently sold E400 coupe.
its been since 17 that I drove a cabriolet with such a small rear window. It’s such a relief when I bring the top down and everything is bright, open, and clear.

It definitely feels unsafe and not something I had expected or noticed when I looked at this model

will have to be extra careful when backing out. That said, it’s easy to miss something in split second moments.

I have a convertible CLE53, yes, the rear window is small-ish, especially with the two extra large headrests there, but, the cameras are good, and I just use those and haven't had any problems yet. You think the CLE is hard to see out the back, that's nothing compared to my now sold Lamborghini Gallardo with no rear camera. It couldn't get any worse than that trying to back up...

My neighbor’s track ready Camaro with a huge black wing rear view is so bad. Worse than the CLE cab. At least GM turned the rear view mirror into a camera.

Blows my mind, Mercedes, a leader in safety technologies, still hasn't adopted full screen rearview mirror/camera technology. Heck, the tech is what, 11 years old, now? IIRC, Nissan, the low tech / gadget interiors was the first auto manufacturer to bring the technologyto the masses.

Imagine the usual rear view camera inside your car. Now, imagine that camera being a screen, like a phone screen, and that screen shows you what's behind you via a high resolution camera mounted somewhere high on the vehicle. Typically, the shark fin antenna on the roof. Most (if not all) OEM rearview mirrors with this tech will also work as "regular"old school rear view mirrors with the flip of a switch. When I first saw it, I thought it was gimmicky. Now, I miss it when I'm driving a vehicle without that tech.

I don't know if it's because I have the augmented reality package, but backing up with my CLE53 AMG is a piece of cake. It shows the rear view, the projected track and a plan view show everything around the car. Could not be easier.

If the rear view through the windows and surround view cameras aren’t enough and something is missed, the sensors are very good at picking up obstacles, rear crossing traffic (including pedestrians), and warning or even emergency stopping if necessary.

I like the fact you get infinite headroom.

That is when backup camera isn't mandatory right? I think it is fair to say, if it wasn't a mandate, even Mercedes nowadays will still charge extra for it. ie. in Canada, the active TPMS wasn't standard on the E 53 in 2019 while it was in the USA because of the mandate. E 53, despite not "just" a E 300, it was not standard. https://mbworld.org/forums/w213-amg/...ng-system.html

Land Rover calls it "ClearSight", GM calls it "Rear Camera Mirror", Toyota calls it "Digital Rearview Mirror".
Start there.

Can't say I've had any visibility issues with backing up in any car since the advent of 360 cameras. I have the C205 C63 so same sloped roof, and I've driven the CLE and many other models and best visibility ever thanks to the cameras. I do have to say I'm not a fan of the perspectives in MBUX and that you have to use the touchscreen to change the views. I find the perspectives and guidelines better in my car and I can just yank the jog wheel up/down to switch between the views as I'm backing up or pulling forward into my garage for example as I'm trying to line up close to the wall, but still the rear camera shows what's behind me and with the Birdseye view I can see all around the car. I use it to properly center my car in parking spots etc, or line it up precisely snug to a curb. I don't even really look out the rear window anymore. The cameras capture everything. The wide angle view sees around cars that are parked next to me, so they give me visibility I never had in any car before rear cameras. The parking sensors assist with anything that I might miss on the camera, like a skinny bollard or some low obstacle.

On further research, MB has the digital rearview mirror as well but only exclusive on the G-wagen 4x4 squared.

Yes, the rear window is a bit narrow, however the rear camera does an excellent job and you also have the beeping / buzzing sound as you back your car.
Just do a few practice run backing up your car and you will get the hang of it.
