Does Running Out Of Gas Cause Problems?

I had my new rims and tires installed and a few hundred yards down the road I ran out of gas. There was a check engine light on and after I fill the car with gas it had a hard time at idle staying constant. In the past the car would idle correctly at around 600 rmp in park.

However, since I ran out of gas, after I have run the car and then shut it off and then restarted it a few seconds later, the car seems to hunt at idle from 1,000 rmp to 0. It will usually die when it can't maintain a constant 600 rpms. I will then have to gun it to keep the idle up enough to start moving.

Once the car is going I don't seem to have any problems at lights but it does seem to stall somewhat when pushing on the gas to accelerate from a stop. There appear to be no problems driving.

The check engine light did go out after 3 cycles, like the user guide said it could if there were no problems, but then it came back on a day later. Is is probable that this is unrelated to the gas issue and just a sympton of the Mass Air Sensor? Do I have to reset the ECU?

I seem to remember, but can't find, a post regarding problems after the car ran out of gas. Anyone have any ideas what the problem may be and the fix? Thanks in advance.

Its never a good thing to run any car out of gas. You will pull the crud at the bottom of your gas tank through your fuel system. This can have/lead to clogged fuel filters or injectors. It can cause them systems to not be able to flow properly.

I was almost empty one time when I parked (last month...Jan.), then when I started it back up later in the day, it didn't run well (rough idle). Put 2 gal. of gas in and it was back to normal. No problems since.

Try running some fuel injector cleaner through it. Hesitation and rough idle could very well be the MAF.

I agree on both accounts. I have the injection cleaner in as we speak. I also found a Bosch MAS for $191.00 on the web. Once I read the code and it appears to be the MAS I will purchase and replace. Not to bad if that is the case.

Also, I see that you received your 275's for the rear. I ended up getting the 265 's because there was very little difference in width but the tires in my case were $100.00 cheaper per tire. Let me know if you have any rubbing issues. Ironically, I hear some on the front right tire?

That reminds me. Ahmad, I HAVE to do my MAF before April (emissions). I'm going to Hawaii Thursday so when I get back I can refocus on the car (been doing a lot of traveling lately). I plan to get it the first of March so hopefully we can get together and we can pop that baby in soon after. Do you have to reset the computer after doing this? If so, do you have the thingy that can reset?

Just call me when you get it and I'll take care of it. I'm not sure if you have to reset the computer, I dont think so. If we do, we can just run by Biz's shop and he'll hook it up. Give me some advance notice because show season is starting and tracks are about to open back up!

I was told years ago it's a very bad idea to run out of gas in any fuel-injected vehicle.

About 6 months ago the wife ran her CLK430 out of gas...I put gas in it but it idled terribly rough...I nursed it home and checked the codes. It had all sort of cylinder misfire codes. I reset the codes with my Actron code reader and all has been fine since. I did change the fuel filter after that too. You may also want to change the Crank Position Sender (cps).

That'll work. I'm right around the corner from Biz.
