Mod w210 projectors to fit clk ???

Mod w210 projectors to fit clk ???

Does anyone have any ideas on this, to mod a set of black w210 projector H7 lamps to fit a W208 clk430 ?

Any reasons why it would be impossible, or undo-able ???

Any obvious problems that one wants to point out.

Would like some of us to hash this around so as to get an idea re. the possiblilty of this.

Hmmm ???

I would leave the tin on the car alone, and mod the plastic housing/surround/etc on the lights. The idea being to get the lights to fit the car. If I end up trashing a $200 set of after market lights, then I have maxed my loss at $200, and my car is not bothered. And if I can figure it out, I'll make an instructional and mayby us clk guys won't have to be left out in the cold when it comes to lighting options.

What I would like is some ideas on the possibility of modding a set of light to fit a w208. I can cut and reshape the plastic housing with a simple fiberglass kit. I've done other plastic repairs with fiberglass. It's strong, and highly workable. The light housings are not a part that is under stress, they just need to fit and sit. The only problem that would make it clearly undo-able is if the lights where the glass part is actually to big to fit into the W208 hood cut-outs. So, am looking for some readily available aftermarket $200 set of black lights that are not too big, that have plastic housings or surrounds, that I might be able to mod and make fit--you know, get the angles right, get the fit right, etc.

Again, I don't know if this is possible, but, never having had these lights in my hand, these in the link below look like a good bet. These are at $173 for both sides. If the little one is not oriented to the big one re. the clk configuration, then, I imagine they each have their own housing unit that has been wed togther, so, just cut them apart, reconfigure, shape a union with fiberglass resin and matting, and then that prob is taken care off. The cavity under the clk hood seems adequately deep in the case where the 210 lights housings are deeper than the clk lights.

$173 black years 00-02 E Class W210 lights:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-02...01245368QQrdZ1

They look like they might fit with some huffing and puffing.
Link: http://www.panchogun.com/FVWebPhotos...ghts-7x100.jpg

For instance, some questions:
1. Does anyone know if the 210 lights have the glass part too big for the clk hood cut-outs ?
2. What other model's lights would NOT be too big for a W208 (year 2000 clk) ?
3. My impression is that all of these black $200 lights have a glass lense, but the rest is plastic. Is this true ?

Here's a sample of a pretty straight forward platic repair job that I did with
fiberglass on a part that would otherwise have been trashed.:
http://www.panchogun.com/FVWebPhotos...mper-6x100.jpg

Here is a posting I placed on the W210 forum, too see if any of them might help us out:

Headlight mod: Clk members looking for help from E Class members.
It seems that the W210 E Class has a break in the model years regarding the
replacement headlamps:

96-99
Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-99...ayphotohosting

and
00-02
Link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-02...01245368QQrdZ1

Does anyone know why that is ?
Are they bigger, smaller, different angles, what ?

Also, if you have a W210 from either of those two groups, could you please provide some of the following info., and let us know your model year.

1. Use a flexible tape and measure the lense diameter at the vertical height
2. and at the horizontal width as accuratley as possible.
3. Can you take close photos of the left lights directly from the front with the hood
closed,
4. and directly from the front with the hood opened,
5. and a couple of shots of the cavity behind the lights.

Lastly, if anyone has a burned out or broken or damaged W210 light that I can use for this experimental mod, then I would gladly pay shipping for it if you would contribute it to the cause.

Thanks

PS. I have also posted the following on the E-Class (W210) Forum:

At this point it seems easier to buy the projector replacements that have appeared on the market lately. Got anything against them?

Then buy them. It's easy.
Answer seems obvious, but, here goes.
I want to mod some of the many W210 lights.
If you can contribute to the topic, then please do so.
Your contribution would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Some like to mod. Some like to buy. This posting is about modding. Thanks.

No one knows cause i think is a big headache, you gonna have to spend a lot of $$$ modifying your hood, fenders and bumper for the lights to fit correctly. I think you'll be better of buying the ones on the market or keep waiting till the new ones come out. Sorry that i cant help you any further but it will cost to much to do what you trying to do, I pick my self those lights with the cheese crater and they dont look that bad when u see them in person, I show my set to Blackbenzz today and i think hes thinking on getting them not quite sure yet if hes going to do it or not. Pictures cant justify the lights trust me on that.

Holy cow. You guys are obsessed.
Now, it's modifying the hood ?
You must be reading some other posting.
Read my posting for goodness sake.
It's the plastic, not the tin, get it ?
I wonder if anyone is actually going to talk about the topic ?
Not everything goes on with a screwdriver.

pancho -
regret that i know little about CLKs, so I ask this question: is there such a thing
as halogen based projectors for your model? or are you asking because w210s
do and this design is not currently available for the 208s? tnx

Raymond,

Wow, a very good point. My vehicle has the standard lights. I bought it new in 2000, and I forwent anything special on the lights.

This bulb is an H7, isn't it ?
Here is my CLK bulb. Is this system also the same as the E-Class ?
Link:
http://www.panchogun.com/FVWebPhotos...Bulb-6x100.jpg

I don't want to upgrade the lighting system.
I just want to see if I can mod some of the $200
E-Class black aftermarket units to fit my CLK.
For some peculiar reason, the E-Class has an
abundance of inexpensive lights available,
and the CLK has only two vendors selling
what I believe to be unattractive and grossly
overpriced options at $800+.
If I can tinker for a weekend or two,
and mod some E-Class lights, then
maybe I helped out the CLK crowd a bit.

But let me know...do my lights match with the E-Class ?

PS. Thanks for staying on topic

What Up Pancho,

I thought this forum would be more responsive to your questions at hand...but I guess I was wrong. The only person on this forum that would be able to help is VIPCLK320, he did it and his lights looked very nice. He did nothing to his hood or bumpers...according to his thread he only scooped out the stock internals and replaced them with the w210 parts and resealed. He did say that it took him a long time but the end result was a more appealing headlight for a better price. Try to PM him and let me know if he contacts you so that I can talk to him also because I would rather have the w210 lights also.

I agree. If the lights are the same size you should be able to keep your stock housings and replace them with w210 internals. The only hard part would be seperating the housing.

I work for Mazda as a PDE and recently wanted to see what the new Miata lights would look like with black reflectors instead of chrome. It took us forever to do the first headlight. We decided to pop the second headlight in the oven to loosen up the glue... it worked like a charm. The cover and housing seperated with minimal effort. Hope this helps!

i've separated about 4 W210 in both Depo and OEM. The OEM took less than
a minute as it only required "U" shaped spring clip removal. The Depos had to
be placed in oven for a few mins to soften the sealant, then it was painless
prying off the outer lens.

I can try and get measures from 99 when I get off work, but I wont have
access to the 00 W210s until the Saturday.

I disassemble the Depos to remove the poorly designed halogen projector,
and in its place, fit an OEM bixenon from E55. The improvements are flat out,
exponentially increased.

Thanks for the info... I might be buying a 2000 CLK 320 next week. I might just remove the factory lens and paint the chrome housings black like we did with the Miata units. All you need is some hi temp black transparent paint.

When you paint the light internals, don't you end up sacrificing the reflective surface, which I think even the black lights retain, or am I wrong ? Do these black lights have NO reflective material ?

Problem is that the only images I have of the black lights is from ebay. I've never examined on up close. Are they really black through and through ?

If some of you folks could post some pics or your black light mods, I would appreciate it muchly. Would really like to see what you have done.

Will search VIPCLK320 postings and see what I can find.

Thanks

buy the ones for the w208 i got them from the UAE 'tax free' for around 300$ then remove the lenses and paint the high temp black... better off take them to a place that chromes stuff and let them make it black chrome... much easier than the manual labor... i waited 2 years to find the black headlights for my previous w202

if u get an 00-02 DEPO W210 projector headlight set then you've done 50% of the job, the other 50, as raymond said, is jus replacing the projectors
