DAMN!! Help needed with Codes P1747 and P0161

All,

I now need help myself....I just got these codes about 10 minutes ago and quickly drove to Autozone for a free diagnostic and they pulled the following codes:

P1747 and P0161 but they did not have the exact codes for the Mercedes models.

I am not getting any symptoms or problems with the car besides the Check Engine light! So I have no idea what this could be.

History: I replaced the MAF, plugs and both front O2 Sensors about 1 year ago so its not one of the normal problems that one would think.

Please help me out if you have any ideas...I just dropped 800 on my Nieces Limo rental so taking the car to the stealership is definitely out of the question right now and I dont want to mess the car up by driving it anymore!!

RE:DAMN!! Help needed with Codes P1747 and P0161

Hey Greg,

I found the DTC's

P17XX Transmission
P1747 CAN signal from ETC. CAN signal failure from ETC or instrument cluster faulty.

P0161 02 Sensor Heater Circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

Hope this helps

Regards,

Rusty

Thanks for the help..I have been googling like hell as well and that is what I have pretty much come up with:

P1747 Electronic Gear Selector Module: Defective Interaction of CAN with control unit A1 (instrument cluster)

P0161 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

I have heard that it could be as simple as a fuse or more expensive stuff!!!!!!!!

I just replaced the lights on my instrument clust like 3 days ago so maybe it has something to do with that as well???

Hey Greg,

Highly unlikely on the bulb change I just changed out my bulbs on the cluster and didn't have any issue, but hell anything is possible these MB's are somethimes a bugger to T/S. (I'm currently fighting a limp mode issue on my CLK think I got it boiled down to a bad conductor plate)

Did you replace the bulbs with the OEM OSRAM bulbs or aftermarket (like LED's) ? That could give you the P1747 or maybe one of the connectors on the back of the cluster might be loose. I'm just brain storming so forgive me.

Also did you recently fill up before the P0161 came on? Maybe bad fuel, but I think you would probably get a MAF error instead and you said you already replaced the MAF a year ago or maybe one of the exhaust sparkplugs didn't burnoff all the fuel causing the O2 sensor to sense it. You might also want to check the rear O2 sensors.

heck your car might of just had a hickup!, But it's a Mercedes and they BURB really bad

Doesn't sound like the errors are too much of a a show stopper for you.

Hope this helps you in the right direction.

Regards,

Rusty

It sounds like you think just like me LMAO!! You wouldn't happen to be a Network Tech as well right?

Anyway, I did recently fill up 4 days ago. I always fill up at Texaco with Premium but I was running low and just filled up at a small cornerstore with Premium.

I replaced the 2 center cluster bulbs with some that I found at Oreilly's that were 1/10th of a volt lower so I never though that the system would be so sensitive as to sense that small of a voltage difference.

I did some more googling and I also found that it could be my Air Filter and it has been a year now and should have been replaced a while back (I know, I know LAZINESS)

I am getting up now to test the fuses and then replace the Airfilters to see if the fault goes away. If not then I will add some fuel additive to see if the gas could be my issue. If its still not fixed then I will make the 2 hour drive to the stealership and buy the factory cluster bulbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Here I go!!!!

Personally, I’d grab a pair of new air filters AND go to the dealer and get the OEM bulbs. Or at a minimum put the old bulbs back in and see if the problem disappears. Yeah, the bulbs shouldn’t be related, but that’s what was said when we couldn’t get the OSA card on Paramount Pictures’ z9 configured with OSASF this week. It couldn’t possibly be related to exactly what the problem was. You do know that EVERYONE here is in IT, right? Those that aren't should be.

Best wishes and post the results.

SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

YEAH!!! I went ahead and bought a new set of filters and put some LUCAS fuel treatment in the tank and drove for about 50 miles... (got a new CD to listen to) and VOILA the error code went away towards the end of the drive!!

I wish I would have done it one at a time to see what was the real problem but I just wanted the problem fixed. So it seems that the O'Reilly bulbs were not the problem after all.

The Air Filters were trashed so I think that may have been the MAJOR problem. I need some K&N's like I have always had in the rest of my vehicles.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to help solve this!!
