Is the 18HP gain including the airbox, filters, and pulleys or was the baseline done with those mods and then the sole addition of the EP-1 providing the 18HP gain?

That is a 18whp gain over the box, filter and pulley. Correct, the baseline was done with only the box, filter and pullies installed.

Hope this helps!

Exclamation Material?

So in speaking with some of the other members there is a question about the which material would be better to use, stainless steel or coated mild steel?

I figured I would open up the floor to discussion for or against either side.

99CLK320,
Evo dude

Mel, I was impressed with the argument that Evodude made for coated mild steel over 304 stainless simply because of the fact, as he stated it, that becasue 304 is harder and becomes more brittle due to heat, over time, it has a tendency to crack whereas mild doesn't and if coated (with whatever it was) did not crack and had good resistance to deteoratioin/rust over time. Please correct me if I misquoted. My question to you would be, which would be the more labor and cost intensive to build, 304 or mild? As I mentioned to you in the past, I am leaning towards the mild because of Evodude's argument because I plan on keeping my car for a long time. Keeping in mind you wanted to keep the price affordable, can your fabricator do either and what works best for you and why? Thanks Mel!!!!

DL-

Cost:

Stainless is more expensive than mild steel, but that is offset when you add in the cost of having the mild steel coated. Stainless is also more expensive to build with.

Durability:

The stainless is a harder/stronger material than mild steel, and as it works it gets even harder/stronger. Stainless could eventually go through enough heat cycles that it may crack, but that should be years down the road. There are ways to help dissipate the heat and keep it away from the metal, ie coating. This is used to bring mild steel closer to the level of stainless.

In the end it could go either way, but the best would be coated stainless. From there its more about looks and personal preference. Coated mild steel can develop surface rust spots, but that's usually on under car exhausts.

99CLK320,
looks

looks under the hood and everything else that sits atop the manifolds doesn't matter to me. those that have show cars or are more interested in looks would surely go for the 304. i'm into longevity so would vote for the mild on that one issue only. You said 304 was more expensive so will the final cost of the mild be less than what you originally estimated?

For longevity, going in order it would be:

321 Stainless Steel
Coated 304 Stainless Steel
Raw 304 Stainless Steel/Coated Mild Steel

The cost per set would remain the same because, while 304 is a more expensive material to purchase and work with, this is offset when you add on another $150-$200 to coat the mild steel.

99CLK320,
321 and coated 304 are out of the picture?

Would there be any advantage to coated 304 or would coating only improve looks?

Raw 304 Stainless Steel or Coated Mild Steel would be the way you would go depending on the vote of the masses? So many options. I feel dizzy. What is your preference Mel?

"Stainless could eventually go through enough heat cycles that it may crack, but that should be years down the road." 10? 20? There's probably no way to know, eh? If 304 could last till I'm 80 I wouldn't give a **** and by then I hope to have learned how to bi-locate and teleport myself.

"There are ways to help dissipate the heat and keep it away from the metal, ie coatinng." Can you say more about this?

You are a patient man. thanks DB

DB-

Its no problem!!! I want everyone to know how and why we do things.

That's raw 304 in the picture and 321 is more along the lines of what Kleemann uses for their headers.

There is an advantage to coating the 304, and by coating, I mean having it go through a process like the company Jet Hot does. Coating helps to keep the heat inside the header and move it out of the exhaust system.

I personally don't mind coated mild steel, that would be my preference. I just didn't want the membership to think they were getting short changed or getting a sub par product.

do you coat 304 with the same substance as mild and is the cost the same for both metals?

based on Evodude's argument and your preference I vote for coated mild.

It's the same process and substance for coating either material.
