I found some MB schematics in my software. Seems MB calls it the "Electronic Control Unit". I will upload these images.
Apparently, there must be at least two "control" devices associated with the 722.623 trans, (1) the ECU inside the transmission, and (2) the TCM (trans control module) under the hood. I had become confused about this because it seems that some use these terms interchangeably, when in fact, they refer to different and separate components.
So, while the TCM can be damaged by trans fluid wicking up the wiring loom, the ECU apparently functions normally while it is bathed in trans fluid. I haven't found any schematics on the TCM yet, but for now, here is what I found on the ECU.
I have also included the "valve body" since it's an obstacle on the way to removing the conductor plate.

The following is based on the premise that you work on your cars.
Two jobs:
#1 The transmission problem is very likely the adapter plug--replace it.
#2 I would also do a transmission flush. Some pointy headed German engineer came up with the disastrous idea of lifetime transmission fluid, which MB has since backed off of, but your car is a victim of that foolishness. Change out the fluid.
Read the ENTIRE mbworld topics linked below regarding the adapter plug,
then research this forum
and probably also research the benzworld.org forum,
for additional info on the plug,
and info on how to do a transmission flush.
Read, educate yourself on these two jobs.
These probably are the two most rewarding jobs you can do on a 430CLK. These jobs repair, and avoid, big big problems with the car, for short money, and your sweat equity.
Regarding the transmission flush, you do NOT have to use the $29/Qt. MB fluid.
You can use Valvoline MaxLife ATF, $3.67 /Qt. at Walmart.

I also suggest you make
"WHEN I PUT IT IN DRIVE IT STAYS IN FIRST AND WILL NOT GO INTO PARK UNLESS I PUT IT IN NETURAL AND TURN OFF THE CAR. WHAT DO I DO!"
as a new topic, so that you can get some feedback addressing that specific symptom. Make the topic header short, like:
2000 CLK won't shift out of 1st gear.

I did not change out the conductor plate. My problem was solved when I replaced the adapter plug, and used brake cleaner to flush out the big black plug that fits into the adapter, and my vehicle shifting problems went away. Later, I also flushed the trans and torque converter. I did not have to do anything to the conductor plate, so, the only info I have on the plate, is what is available in the forums.
Questions:
1. It's been some months. What's happening w/your vehicle ?
2. Do you still have problem with the top not working ?
